I'm getting an itch to pay the Western New York & Pennsylvania RR a visit and get a good 251 fix. I live in Toronto, so the drive isn't too bad, and it'd be a great way to spend an autumn weekend, but I'd rather not make the drive without some idea of how they operate (or if on weekends at all).

Could anyone provide some information on their operations? Where the line(s) run to and from (Hornell to Meadville)? Days of operation, where the power is serviced. etc. Any assistance would be most appreciated.

I'm only familiar with Meadville. The group above is a good source of info. The MEHN was an overnighter, but I've seen reports of daylight trips lately. There is at least one Meadville local M-F that can go anywhere from Corry to Oil City. Sometimes on weekends too. LAL/WNYP recently imposed a new rule that if you wish to visit company property, you are to contact Corperate a minimum of 24 hrs ahead of time with no guarentee that will get an escort. You can shoot both Olean and Meadville from public property anyway though. As far as chasing, the crews themselves are railfan friendly as long as you respect the limits, as well as everyone else as long as you follow their stipulations as above.

I'm not real sure of the Driftwood train, but it was a daylighter until the movie started filming on the Buffalo Line. There is usually also 2 NS coal run-throughs and counterparts per day that run through from Meadville (re-crew) to Hornell, but times vary.

From what I gather when the DFT runs it is on duty at 10:00 in Olean and usually reaches Driftwood around 3. That is without the movie shootings. They will be there until October 6. Whatever happens though, good luck!

Also if you aren't having luck with the WNYP, I've heard that the BPRR SIJB is on duty to head south in Salamanca (nearby) sometime before 9 in the mornings on Saturday!

Thanks for in info so far, guys. I guess it's gonna be hit and miss on a weekend. Might have to make a long weekend out of it. Weather is another concern... it'd suck to spend a few days in the rain!

Since the DFT is running at night (and that's the primary chase I do), the only other solid bet I can give you is the Hornell Turn, which goes on duty at 7 or 8 AM in Olean every Sunday morning. If the sun is shining, this stretch will be difficult to shoot (at one point it's going due East, the next minute due South, and after that due North...hope for a cloudy day, believe me!). *THE* shot on this stretch is the pond in Andover, which you'll plainly see from the road (good for when they're going back West).

SIJB over on the B&P is another great chase, which shouldn't be discounted (where else are you going to get three SD45s these days?). Great scenery, tough grades, B&O CPLs, and plenty of vintage EMD power all over the place. Take SIJB South to Johnsonburg where they swap crews and take JBSI back North.

Check my Railpictures.net account for photos of both chases. There's also the Arcade & Attica if you want a steam-powered ALCO, the Southern Tier Line (boring power, but some incredible scenery), and plenty of other shortlines around.

Are there any signs or circumstances that will tell me if the train had left or not if I arrive in Salamanca on a Friday morning at say 8:00? Me and my Dad will be doing a similar weekend trip while the foliage is out and I want to be POSITIVE i'll catch action! If you don't luck out with these two try OC&T with the M420. Rumor has it they run on Saturdays with the freight run right behind the excursion train.

The crew goes on duty at 8:30 or so...they usually hang around the yard office for a while getting their paperwork together, knocking off handbrakes, etc. before rolling South (and prior to that, the train has generally been sitting there since before dawn). So if the train is sitting in front of the depot, they're there. If not, you're out of luck...

The freight is on the front for the trip back north.:wink: Don't forget, you might luck into one of the S2's instead also. I've heard that they have been 85 on occassion.

Well, unless the weather is going to be total poop, I'll be in WNYP territory October 17/18. Hope I get something to make the trip from Toronto worthwhile!

I was going to be down there the 18th but the chase vehicle is in the shop! I'll just have to wait till NOvember...on the bright side maybe the DFT will run normal then too!

Hey guys, thanks again for the info. I shot the DFT in daylight with four six axles to Driftwood and return in the snow, mist and rain... it was a great day with lots of fall colour, the rain helped, not hindered things.

Next day the OL-1 was delayed by an NS WB empty hopper train, so they got out of the yard at around 1130, but still got it in many spots. Worth a return visit for sure... again and again!

I think I speak for all of us when we say we're glad to help (although I only knew as much as you until the beginning of the thread:). I'll see that DFT sometime in December...

Your photos that say "Keating" are actually no where near Keating, PA. "Keating Summit" and "Keating" are two different places. Very east to overlook, yet, very different places.

Thanks Kevin, I've corrected them. I'm a PA noob... took forever to determine that it was Sinnemahoning Creek, no thanks to Google's belief that rivers names are superfluous.

Which excursion train is that? I can't find any mention of it on their website and we're hopign to visit in 2010.

Ahh thanks. For a moment there I had visions of C630 lash ups on passenger trains....! And you're right about the volume - what are they thinking of?
