1.) EMD SD40-2 in any paint scheme, but especially any former Southern SD40-2. It's a classic locomotive, and quite possibly the finest ever built.

2.) EMD GP59 or GP60 in NS paint (especially NS 4610). My favorite four-axle locomotives. I just wish we saw more of them around here.

3.) EMD SD70 in either Conrail Blue or NS Horsehead. A classy looking locomotive, and always photogenic.

4.) EMD SD70M in any paint except Union Pacific. The UP SD70M's are just like NS Catfish around here since they're seen on pretty much a daily basis. The NS Horsehead SD70M's have a nice look to them.

5) EMD MP15DC I've only seen these in NS paint, but the sound from a little bit of butt-head action is awesome.

1.) Alco RS-3 (any scheme)

2.) GE C40-8 (CSX grey ghost with italic numbers), a work horse if there ever was one. The loco that beat EMD.

3.) Lima-Hamilton LS-750 (only built for one railroad, Cincinnati Union Terminal)

4.) GE C30-7 (CSX, any scheme)

5.) EMD GP9 (Indiana & Ohio, C&O, N&W) A pleasure to run.

1 Baldwin DS-4-4-1000

2 EMD SDL-39

3 EMD F-45(FP-45)

Who would of thought the Baldwin would outlive the EMD units.

My favorite diesel locomotives are:

1) EMD SD9

2) EMD SD45 (Not SD45-2)

3) EMD SD40T-2

4) EMD SD45T-2

5) Baldwin AS616

Steam is another list for me.

To keep the list short, I had to stick to modern freight diesels. Electrics and 2nd generation units are another post entirely.

C40-8, of course. Standard cab, please.
SD70AC, especially in CSX paint.
SD40/45 lease engines. Good to see these still running.

Does anybody else think CN's C44AC's are the best looking GE widebodies out there?

1. Chessie System GP40, GP40-2. Especially the B&O 4033.

2. 8-40CW, 8-41CW, 8-44CW, 9-44CW, 9-40CW. I like the look of GE widecabs. Sue me. Especially ATSF or BNSF Warbonnets and CR. They all look good, though.

3. Chessie System SD50. Too bad they were the last of the line.

4. Amtrak P32AC-DM

Hmmm, one isn't a loco but it is a piece...

1) NS GP60 horns--they just sound mean :-D
2) C39-8
3) SD40-2
4) SD80MAC in CR Blue
5) DD40AX
6) GP38/40-2

1. GP30 in any scheme. There was no other locomotive of its era with its distinctive look.

2. Any second generation EMD in Chessie paint. That paint scheme looked great on that body style. (Not so much on anything else)

3. Alco RS2, or 3 in any scheme.

4. U25B and C.

Some of these are just by appearance. For example, the U50 had problems but I like its distinctive front.

1. Alco PA series
2. EMD E/F series
4. GE U50

1. Cab Forward
2. Big Boy
3. Challenger
4. Jawn Henry (steam turbine)
