Just because he wasn't happy with 7,000+ views, 110+ favorites and a 2nd Place PCA, Dave Honan just had to go and win Trains Magazine's 2009 Photo Contest with this shot:

[photoid=275292]
Dave also gets a new Canon 50D and 28-135mm lens to add to his camera bag.

Another RP contributor from the Pacific Northwest, Steve Carter, walked away with second prize for a BNSF shot in Vancouver, WA (http://www.trains.com/trn/objects/images/columbia-drawbridge-carter.jpg) (not yet on RP, hint, hint).

Though I believe that some of the runners-up won because of the name attached to the photo, Trains picked three great photos for the Top 3. See all the winners here (http://www.trains.com/trn/default.aspx?c=a&id=6188).

Congrats again, Dave and Steve. Now, do we need to start a collection to keep you from entering next year's contest? :)

Dave's shot was certainly a very worthy first prize. But after that, I was singularly disappointed in terms of "prize winning" pix. Most days I see equal or better pix here.

This is probably another example of the internet being a better venue than the print media for certain things. It is so easy to submit pix to RP, that the sheer volume of pix here makes it more likely that best here will be better than the best in a magazine. And I think more and more good photogs are seeing that, and beginning to use RP or other internet sites to share their pix.

Some folks continue to attach a certain cache to getting "published" in (and paid by) the print media, but I think that prejudice is quickly crumbling.

agreed.

Well, keep in mind that Trains circulation is about 90,000. Only two shots on RP have ever gotten that many views.

Although the grand prize was stunning, I was really impressed with the 1st prize taken over in Canada. The composition and depth is awesome!

I didn't have a photo that could go up against the winners anyways but next year I will at least try to get some in. Their rules confused me. Submissions were due by 10-31 and had to be taken no later then 10-31 but they said they needed to be in the mail around 10-27. Well somewhere in my head I was sure they were due by 11-30. So I went to find some photos, reread the rules and then said to myself - oh s**t.

Congrats to the winners.

Did I read the rules correctly this year...."Hit Me With Your Best Shot" (your best shot of 2010) with a deadline of Sept 30? So, if the deadline for the prior contest was a year earlier, does that mean we'll NEVER see any fall color shots in these contests? Is that really fair?

If they are going to have a "year" contest, then they should make the period of capturing those shots start at the time of the closing of the prior contest. So, "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" should include shots from November 1, 2009 until the due date of September 30, 2010.

Seems fair, no?
