Under the Christmas tree this year was a wide angle lens for my
digital camera, for which I didn't even realize could accomodate
additional lenses! :D I have the option of exchanging it for a zoom
lens.

My question is what do those of you who take rail photography
prefer? A wide angle or zoom?

Thanks,

Speaking for myself I would have to say both. It really depends on this situation. Sometimes 18mm is the way to go. Sometimes 300mm. This is a question that has no right or wrong answer. I never go out railfaning without being able to cover fron 18-300mm and have found few situations that I'm unable to get a shot.
