Hey gang! I'll be out in Philly again for my internship this summer, and this year, I get there in time to have Memorial Day off. Assuming I have the money, I'd like to try take some kind of trip to New York.
The only question is to where. I'm looking for somewhere mountainous, hopefully featuring some large bridges, and 4-5 hours from Philly. Also, a nearby state park to camp would be good as well.
I've looked at Portageville (which is at the edge of my "traveling radius), but I'm not sure if there is anything else in the area to see besides that.
Looked into following the CSX River Sub, but I don't know anything about that line, either.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

In general, the area at Bear Mountain, NY (big state park in the area, maybe camping around there)

Portageville is right within a state park, so there's your camping part of the trip. The Southern Tier has such a wide variety of great shots too...will you have a vehicle for this trip? There is plenty of other stuff around too...WNY&P to the south (and sister railways B&H to the east and LA&L to the north, all of which are all-ALCO), Rochester & Southern is very close by, Arcade & Attica (steam operation) is also pretty close. Take a look at my photos to get an idea of what these railroads have to offer (and ask away if you have any questions).
The River Sub is another good option - can't say I've shot it yet myself, but there are plenty of good shots there too and more trains than the Southern Tier...although I think you're pretty well limited to just CSX there.

And if you feel like venturing up to Rochester for some CSX mainline action, there's always this shot:

I got a bit carried away with all of the photos, but you get the idea...

Oh look, a thread that shows why I'm jealous of Nick's RP portfolio. Awesome. :-)

Two angles available from Portage:

The shots are right there on the first page. Looks like Nick's got you covered, but, go ahead and ask me if there are any questions about Portage specifically. (pm please, then I can give you my mail)
