Dang! You beat me to it! I think that they are crazy if they are gonna repaint all their locos that look just fine as they are  ! The new logo is OK, just not on the front of a locomotive! 8)

While it looks better than Heritage 2, it's still a punkin. I'd probably shoot these for a while and then proceed to get tired of them.

Let's be serious, the logo looks like something from the poster of a cheesy action movie, not a railroad emblem

The thing doesn't look right either across the nose of the loco. The sides, well, at least their straight, but with nose contours it looks like turd.

Sorry, but I think I'll photograph Ugly Pacific before I waste my time photographing this crap. I guess I'll have to get all the locations I can now before this trash is spattered all over the front of every train like the heritages are now...

Wow. Too bad Grand Forks has a BNSF yard in downtown. Fortunately, they have half a dozen other plus paint schemes in their livery.

"During the 10 years since the merger that created BNSF, much has changed in the railroad landscape," Rose said. "BNSF has identified itself as progressive, vital, approachable and resourceful -- a strong part of the global transportation network. As we look to the future, we believe that our identity should reflect those core attributes."

Somebody got promoted for this. What a shame.

The new BNSF identity will be phased in over a period of time. It will appear on locomotives and other rolling stock, stationery, signage, the BNSF Web site, logo merchandise and other promotional items.

Looks like it might be appearing on every locomotive after awhile.

Finally, what do we, as the railfan community, lable this monster? Here's my list:

- Pumpkin III
- Heritage 3
- Underline (i.e. I shot a BNSF Underline unit today)
- PVAR (as in "progressive, vital, approachable and resourceful" from the company CEO)
- Tardbonnet

Also, whenever you type 'BNSF,' be sure to underline it.

I guess the painter wasn't quite finished when the photo's were leaked. Here is the completed paint scheme being unveiled by the new BNSF (Burlington's Nike Sports Franchising) CEO.

Wow, what a way to destroy the look of a great looking paint scheme. I thought that they had finally got it right with Heritage II, and now this. What a shame. It just goes to show photograph what is there now because you never know what the future will bring.

Read this comparison on another board. Eh, kinda close. Perhaps it's symbolic: it sounds good, but looks like crap!

Another good nickname is the Unleaded scheme, as in from Super Fleet to Premium Heritage to Regular and ugly looking

BNSF, the name says it all

The Sonic Bonnet.

It looks like the Sonic logo?

All I can say is that doesn't belong on a locomotive - its horribly revolting.

Here's their new slogan:

BNSF - we put the vomit in Vomit Bonnet.

Maybe it is time to put a little perspective on things.

FORT WORTH, Texas, Jan. 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation (NYSE:BNI) (BNSF) today reported all-time record quarterly earnings of $0.91 per share, a 49 percent increase over fourth- quarter 2003 earnings of $0.61 per share.
"For the third consecutive quarter, BNSF experienced unprecedented market demand from its customers. As a result, BNSF achieved all-time record volumes and revenues," said Matthew K. Rose, BNSF Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer. "This performance coupled with our continuing focus on expense control produced all-time record quarterly earnings. I want to congratulate our employees for successfully handling the historic volumes we moved during 2004."
Fourth-quarter 2004 freight revenues increased $464 million, or 19 percent, to an all-time quarterly record of $2.92 billion compared with 2003 fourth-quarter revenues of $2.46 billion. Consumer Products revenues increased $212 million, or 22 percent, to an all-time quarterly record of $1.18 billion as a result of double-digit increases in the international intermodal, truckload, and perishables sectors. Industrial Products revenues increased $89 million, or 16 percent, to $631 million reflecting strong demand in the building products, petroleum products, and construction products sectors. Coal revenues rose $90 million, or 17 percent, to $615 million resulting from record haulage of 66 million tons for utility customers. Agricultural Products revenues were up $73 million, or 17 percent, to $492 million driven by strong export moves to the Pacific Northwest.
Operating expenses of $2.31 billion were $295 million, or 15 percent, higher than the same period in 2003, primarily driven by a 10-percent increase in gross ton-miles and higher fuel prices.
Fourth-quarter operating income increased $191 million, or 40 percent, year-over-year to $668 million. BNSF's operating ratio decreased three and one-half percentage points to 77.1 percent from 80.6 percent in the prior year.

I don't like this new unnecessary new logo, but to keep things in perspective, it's better than the bland "CSX" name/look, and it's much better than Nazi-Southern black.

It didn't take much effort, or originality to conceive the new logo aparently, and in my opinion, for what they aim to achieve with the new look is this:

http://www.geocities.com/mmetalhhead/bnsf1.gif

The dash is a lean into the future obviously, which is cool, but the impression is like that of a sports car, rather than a railroad locomotive. It's just weird.

But wait, Matt Rose said: "BNSF has identified itself as progressive, vital, approachable and resourceful..."

Well, shouldn't they be changing it to PVAR - The Progressive, Vital, Approachable, Resourceful Railroad Company?

GAH! NOOOOOOO!!! THE NEW PAINT SCHEME LIVES!!!

http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,878218,nodelay=1

The H2 ES44DCs will be RARE!

Grrrrrrrrr...At least BNSF will still be better than UP in spirit, even if their logo is uglier.

The best thing about BNSF is that they have the most diverse paint schemes out there already and they don't seem to be in any hurry to re-paint their older units. I think I've seen every incarnation (minus the new scheme) up here. It's like having 6 or 7 different railroads to shoot at with all the paint variety!

I have one thing to say about that logo... UGLY!

BNSF had to wreck their paint scheme with that terrible logo.

If they ever get around to a coast-to-coast merger (i.e., with NS or CSX), then there's a perfect solution to all of this paint scheme and RR name nonsense...

May I introduce the...

"Atlantic, Pacific, and Santa Fe"

Paint scheme: Warbonnett. It'd be the best marketing coup (again) any RR could ever hope for!
