How many Conrail painted locomotives are left on NS and CSX? Both seem to be in a hurry to repaint all of them. Thanks!

16 or so on CSX, 70 ish on NS, couldnt find the exact numbers right now. The surviving models in CR paint are:
C40-8
C40-8W
GP38-2
GP40-2
SD40-2
SD50
Might have missed a few, but all SD60 variants have been painted, as have the 70MAC's and 80MAC's.

Thanks! I've hope I see a few more before they are all gone. So far I only have one good shot of a Conrail painted unit. I saw a Conrail/CSX C40-8 on a KCS intermodal a few months back but my crappy tripod screwed up the shot. I wasn't too happy about that.

12 left on CSX at last count, and at least a few of those are suspected to now be Yn3 (just lacking photo evidence). At this rate, they'll all be gone on CSX by the end of 2011...shoot 'em now!

Even if you care nothing for the company itself, its hard to deny that they are far more photogenic than either NS black or CSX YN3.

Rarity aside, clean and unpatched, yes. Patched and dirty, not as much.

Not really. What few CR painted units that are left are looking pretty ratty. Especially the "quality" units that used the scotchlite lettering.

The only ones that look really ratty were the C40-8W's which was across the board on all railroads, problem with GE's paint at that time, look at the remaining ATSF C40-8W's. Theres only one of those left on NS anyways, and it looks pretty good.
These all look pretty good, all shot within the last year, though some have been repainted.

The only Conrail locomotive that I've gotten a good shot of looked pretty good.

Don't just throw in the GE's in the ratty category. Remember UP's SD60Ms in the late 90's? They lost almost all of their paint before they were 10 years old.

Both builders have had their batches of bad paint, the later SD70MAC's were very bad, look at the CSX and BNSF H2's ones.

Some Grinstein Green MACs look bad too, as well as some H2 Dash 9s. Having said that, some executives and H2 Dash 9s have held up really well.

I'd rather have 100 or so ratty looking old paint schemes than have them all painted like 7,000 other locomotives out there.

CSX's 4700-4830 SD70MAC's which were the first (and only) EMD DELIVERED YN3 locomotives to date have faded in comparison to the 500 and 5100 series AC4400's delivered at the same time, but they are not nearly like BNSF's H2 CW40-9's orange which almost faded to white, or some of the ratty Warbonnets out there.

If I recall correctly, 4700-4850 were painted by VMV, not EMD, which might explain the poor paint jobs. I also recall production of BNSF's SD70MACs being outsourced to Mexico and whatnot, which also may have factored in to the lousy paint jobs. I'm just going off memory here, so don't assume this is all necessarily factual...

3 left on CSX...4428, 7301, and 7302. It's now that it is really setting in that they're all pretty much gone, when they were all over just 2 years ago. If anyone would like to start a "conrail's gone" grief group though, count me out. Time to move on.

So, I believe it is time to update this again. What is the count now? I bet a lot of the engines on the list in August have been repainted.

CSX issued a order late this summer that all Conrails are to be painted when they went for their 90 day inspections, as such the current count is 0. NS has about 60 now.

2758 and 8865 are still in CR paint, albeit in storage at HLS. Technically you could still photograph them, so the official count is 2.
Pretty amazing how fast they can do something when they want to. I'm still miffed they painted 4617 only to retire it soon after..

That's more than I was thinking. With so many left (relative to what I was thinking) I need to get out and catch a few of them. Easier said than done I guess, especially since I don't live near a major NS line. Plus, I don't know how to get traces on Conrail units.

Didnt hear they retired 4617. But it doesnt surprise me. CSX repainted a bunch of the conrail B36-7's, all the B23-7R's, all the C39-8's and at least 2 C36-7's and then promptly retired them. Still a bunch of really nicely painted GE's sitting in the deadline in Waycross...
I guess NS now has the title of most rag-tag fleet out there. Those ex-CNW SD60's they have running around in UP paint and all the leasers certainly add some flavor I guess

Not only retired, but sitting at Cumberland getting cannibalized. There was interest by a certain historical society to acquire it, but it'll be picked clean and melted I figure. And so it goes...

Here's the untold story about the 4617, take it for what you will, this what I was told.
The painting of the unit was pretty much a revenge kill by the Waycross shop when they found out that their flag unit, the Seaboard System painted 2667 was to get a new cab and repainted at Huntington. So Waycross got a hold of the 4617 and repainted it, I've heard there were some higher ups that were pretty unhappy about the unit being repainted since it had a very limited future. As far as preservation, theres nothing all that special about it really, the only thing that made it unique was its ancient paintjob before it got YN3'ed, and that alone doesnt make it preservation worthy. As for CSX donating anything, yeah good luck with that.....

CSXT 2758 and 8865 are the last remaining Conrail painted units on the system. As noted above they are both stored at Huntington. There are 43 remaining on NS. Get'em while you can.

They repainted only a few of the above mentioned units. 1 out of 4 B23-S7R's, 4 out of 23 B36-7's, 1 out of 25 C36-7's and 4 out of 9 C39-8's. Most of the repainted units lasted a while before retirement with the exception of the B23-S7R which went quickly. All of the large railroads have repainted locomotives which didn't last long on the roster following repaint, its not unique to CSX.
