I would love to see some recent Kodachrome (or any type of slides) shots. I just think it would be cool to see familiar sites portrayed in slide. So if anyone has, or knows where I could find, some recent (last 3 to 5 years or so) rail pix taken on slides, I want to see it.

Thanks in advance,
Peter

I was going to email you some, but then I realized they all suck. My experience with exposing led me to totally kill the only roll I ever shot. :P

I have a few shots from the past 4-5 years posted in one of my Flickr albums. Eventually I'll have more posted, its just a case of so many photos so little time. All of the photos in this album are shot on Fuji slide film, most if not all Provia 100F.

Wow, some of those are terrific. Have you gotten a recent slide scan on RP? Have you tried? What are you using for a scanner?

I have heard that Rollei Digibase CR200 film gives the closest look to Kodacrhome. I'll give it a try some day. Right now I have Velvia 50 in the camera, which is going to make it difficult to shoot at 1/500!

Thanks! Taking a look at things my newest slide scans are from October 2006. However, I really don't submit much here and since I have long shot both film and digital side by side I often have similar shots on both film and strictly digital formats. Given the choice I will choose a RAW file from pne of my Canon DSLR's over a slide scan any day.

My scanner is a Nikon Coolscan V ED. These are nolonger available new and I have had mine for about 7 years now but its well worth the money. It cost about $600 when brand new, used units can be found for roughly the same price if not more because they are in strong demand.

I do still shoot film, but on a far more limited basis now than 2 or 3 years ago. I'm slowly scanning stuff from the last 12 years (how long I've been doing still photos) and will have to workup a few more recent shots and submit them when I get time. I'm still working on photos from the last couple of months including a vacation to the BNSF Transcon out in Arizona a week ago so the old film shots aren't getting priority right now.

Ah, one of the lucky few with a Coolscan.

These are great:

Actually there are too many to link here. I encourage you to submit one and hope they wouldn't nail you for some tickytack reason.

Here's a nice photo. Not kodachrome, but slide film:

Keep 'em coming David.

Love the first one. That 70mac looks GREAT. Who says YN2 is a nicer paint scheme? Bah! :-D

Thanks. The pair of SD70MAC's in the first shot were on their first revenue run, having been delivered and setup here in Louisville,KY a couple days before the photo. They looked fantastic in fresh paint but given the choice I'd have definitely chosen YN2. Oh well!

That is either me, or a prediction of me in all too few years from now. :)

And you too, a little further down the road!

Maybe it's not the paint scheme that turns me off with YN2, but rather the colors. I love the rich blue and yellow of YN3. YN2's colors just look so bland to me. Maybe they could make a special YN2 scheme with YN3's colors?

It depends. YN2 as applied as repaints, the blue varied quite a bit, but the as-delivered units, the CW40-8, the first 2 order of SD70MAC's in the 700's, the AC4400's and AC6000's I thought looked really good and were uniform. I prefer both the shade of blue as well as the yellow.

The yellow they use on the YN3 looks horrid as it ages. The blue is fine on YN3, I dont know what it would look like if applied on a YN2.

I haven't seen any aged YN3 paint jobs in person to notice that the yellow has gone bad. However, you want to talk about horrid yellow on YN3, take a look at the noses of the 70MACS and ACEs. Just awful. Don't know why they couldn't use the same yellow that they use on GE YN3 paint jobs.

Everything looks nice when its a week out of the paintshop.........
Not so much now, the GE's dont look all that much better either.

Meanwhile these were all painted what, 10 years ago at the earliest.

For the record CSX Blue and Gray (not stealth) was alright too...simple but held up pretty well.

Perfect example of the puke yellow nose that's commonly found on EMDs. I wonder why they used a different yellow from GEs on the nose of EMDs for YN3 paint jobs? Very odd.

Even on the shot of them new there is a little difference between the nose and side paints, which is odd. I think it was a bad batch of paint, the BNSF SD70MAC's of same vintage look just as awful, doesnt explain the different shades though. All the Huntington EMD repaints look fine (for YN3 that is..)

I was never a fan of the YN2. I One thing I never liked was how the yellow slanted off the nose at an angle. It looked especially bad on the standard cabs, in my opinion. Now that most of CSX is YN3, I can't say I'm a big fan of it either. I'd love to see another paint scheme come along that somehow played up on the railroad's heritage. Not a UP-type heritage, but maybe something with grey, red or yellow.
