I usually don't post my rejects in the forum but I really don't agree with this rejection. People always complain about how RP only accepts 3/4 wedgie shots, I have, as well as others, have proven thios wrong by adding all types of photos. When I go for a day such as last Saturday I try using different angles and different compositions to get the best shot not just the "3/4 wedgie". After chasing NS H76 from Allentown Yard to Portland, PA, one last shot was attempted by the ex-Lackawanna Station in Portland. As I setup for the train to roll by the station I saw a group of local kids running to see the train go by them. I decided to encorporate them into the shot to add some life to the photo. To do this succesfully I put the kids in the left side of the photo and put H76 as close to the middle as possible and framed it with a sign showing the location of the photo. It was originally rejected for Poor Lighting since it was cloudy, so I lightened it up as much as possible in PS and resubmitted. It was than rejected for bad angle. Again I resubmitted because I personally don't like that reason. Once again it was rejected but this time it was for bad cropping. I cropped a little tighter towards the kids on the left and close to the sign on the right and took off some foreground and sky. This one was rejected for bad cropping again. If I crop the left side which i think they want to see it would take away the meaning of the photo and make it a regular lifeless 3/4 shot. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hmmmm, they're giving you a tough time with this one. I personally like it a lot, but clouds will kill you here. I think you need to have a bit less cropped off the right side and it would be perfect.
Let's see what the screeners on the forums have to say...

The only thing I see is plant of some sort in the fore ground right in front of your lens. That, to me, is the only thing that detracts from the photo.

Nice composition.

It is a neat shot, but you would probably be better off saving it for your personal collection. I would have to concur with the rejection reason, but as always, you are more than welcome to appeal...

You know I like your work. I agree the compostion is good I like the photo. But the brush would be the killer to the shot. The suggestion of cropping more from the right might work for it's a nice photo. You can appeal but I agree with EM on this one save it for your own collection.

I am impatient and looked at your picture before reading your post. My eye was taken first by the sign and moves last to the blurry plant in the front. It wasn't until after reading your post that there were kids in the shot.

I am not a big fan of this composition. I would have enjoyed the sign on the left and the train coming around the bend.

Andrew,
Its definetly a great shot but that brush is right in the picture and is a real distraction.

Andrew;

This may be a case where you're trying to do too many things with one shot. I like the kids in the shot, at least the idea more than the actual finished product. I think too many railfans miss the personal touch that an actual real live person in a shot can add.

But the sign on the right hand side is what throws me off. (Keep in mind that at this point I'm ignoring the leafless bush in the foreground.) Trying to incorporate all these things on each side of the shot is going to be tough for anyone. In this shot, the kids are toofar off to the side of the shot. The train is smack dab in the center of the shot and too far backdown the traks. The sign throws everything off kilter.

My guess is that the grey sky did not have anything to do with this shot being rejected. Snow on the ground seems to outweigh any grey in the sky.

It got accepted with the kids and branch cropped off.
