Train simulators/games

Figured I'd ask this question here, you guys seem to be the experts on railroad related things as well as some of the most helpful. Does anyone know of a good train simulator/game? I have flight simulators, sub simulators and warship simulators but no trains. I'd like something that is accurate and has historical and current engines/rolling stock.

I believe Trainz is the standard. It looks pretty cool, but doesn't work on a Mac.

Trainz is pretty good, get 2012, the Mojave sub route is awesome and comes with some good old school SP and Santa Fe power. The best part about Trainz for me is how easy it is to build your own routes, I had some good stuff going but alot of it got nuked in my HD crash.....
Oh and yes they do have a Mac version now.

People still run MSTS...it's 10 years old and showing its age, but they're working on Openrails that's backwards compatible.

Thanks guys, I knew this was the right place to ask. Looks like I'll be submitting my purchase request to the Minister of Finance and see if she'll let me get Trainz. :)

Haven't tried Trainz yet, though I'm thinking of picking up 2012. If the minister of finance balks at that, try MSTS. You should be able to find a copy pretty cheap, and there's lots of free stuff out there you can download in terms of additional locomotives, routes, and such.

I might try that as an alternate. Saw another one, Railworks, that's on Steam. That one sounds ok but it looks like it's limited on routes and power but you can probably get mods from the community.

Railworks is the best graphically but almost all add ons are payware it seems, and not cheap either.
If I had to rank them it would be Trainz > Railworks > MSTS. MSTS is good if you just like driving trains but to do anything more than that is a pain.

Oooo, thanks for that Nikos. Looks like it's gonna be Trainz if I can talk her into letting me get it, of not then talk her into MSTS.
