Got an e-mail this evening from a copany in Charlotte that wants to use my photo for a smart phone weather app. People who live in that area in North Carolina would see my shot as a backdrop when getting weather for that area. The e-mail was not explicit, but seemed to leave open the possibility they would pay or at least consider it. Any ideas what such a use would go for?

Full disclosure, it's not a railroad shot, though I did shoot it while chasing trains!

I'd check out Corbis' present pricing myself.

Going by their prices Joe, I'd ask for 1.7 million dollars. :)

preface: i have no idea the answer to your question

but, what would it cost to get a local photog to go take a similar picture? a few hundred bucks?

To go take the picture? Or for the rights to continuous use of the photo? I had to pay a photographer to come to my wedding to take pictures, then pay for the pictures, and then if I wanted the negatives so I could print more pictures in the future, I had to pay for those too. I can guarantee the "locla photog" would want a guarantee of pay for doing the work of going out to shoot even if it ended up that the company didn't like any of the photos he took and decided not to use any of them. So I would think, though I don't know the right answer either, that the equivalent of the fee for a photo shoot plus a charge for the photo itself would be appropriate.

I hate this facet of photography. They want this photograph, but I'm willing to bet that when I reply and ask what their budget is for this, she'll say something along the lines of, "Budget? What budget?" I'm guessing they don't plan to pay.

Yeah, sounds like the kind of company that doesn't have much cash to begin with. It's your photo, so you should tell them how much you want. Then the ball's in their court. If they don't offer you anything, to hell with them.

If they don't plan to pay, then don't bother putting in the work to fix the w/a distortion. If they pay good money, fix it.

You and your wide angle distortion rants! The odd thing is I almost didn't take the shot because of the shadows.

 Sorry, it just bugs the crap out of me and it's usually pretty easy to fix.

He's gonna need a tilt-shift lens to "fix" that picture. :)

Since they asked to use it, I doubt they want it "fixed." And, yes, they did in fact give me the "Budget, what budget?" reply. To which I am about to give me "Photograph, what photograph?" reply.
