Hi

While looking through tha database, through photos from Germany, to be exact, I have noticed that there is an enormous chaos going on in the Railroad Name section. You have several different names for the same railroad company - DB (ex. DB, Deutsche Bahn, Deutsche Bahn AG, DB (German National Railways), Deutsche Bundesbahn, DB German Railways and other...). This is causing major chaos and the database isn't working as well as it could be. We had the same problem in the Polish section of the database but some rules for Poland have been recently created >> View them here << (http://www.railpictures.net/forums/showpost.php?p=7208&postcount=13) and we're hoping to soon get rid of that problem once and for all. :)

I'm not an expert on German railroading so that's why I'm asking all German train spotters, for the sake of our beloved RailPictures.net database , to discuss and come up with one final name for DB. So we could than ask one of the Chris'es  to correct it.

P.S.
You could also create some kind of unification of locomotive names and classes, because it is a lil' bit confusing too... :)

<i>Anything</i> from outside North America (and Poland). is chaotic.

Loads of names for the railways in Germany, the Netherlands, the UK.... At my last count a few weeks back the Nederlandse Spoorwegen had no less than 4 variations. By now that may have increased again.

Then there are various versions among rolling stock. Try for instance DD-IRM, V-IRM, IRM, VIRM, VRIM (!). And that's all for just one train type! Some put in the number of the train instead of the type name. Some put in nothing at all.

There are even variations in country names! For instance: Netherlands, Netherlands Europe, the Netherlands, Holland (!).

I think finding a standardization for non-American trains would help in the long term and make this site more appealing for the people outside North America. As it is now, it is a great site for American (freight) trains, but for non-american passenger trains it is not that appealing yet.

Getting this standard is going to be tricky though. Although, the number of regular "foreign" contributors of this site can probably still be counted on your hands.

Personally, I'd love to be able to search photos by country or even by continent. Cause to be honest, I am not a fan of those large American freight trains. And having to sort through 500 freight trains to find 1 euro style passenger train is not worth my while.

Here is a link that'll help sort things out. http://www.dbtrains.com/Eng/ .

Epoch II 1920-1945 Deutsche Reichsbahn Gesellschaft (DRG)

Epoch III 1945-1970 Because Germany was devided in four zones, the Deutsche Reichsbahn was also divided in four different railway companies. The railways were now placed under military control. Because of this, each railway company had it's own policies and plans.

Epoch IV 1970-1990 Deutsche Bahn

Epoch V 1990-until now Deutsche Bahn AG

Hope this helps some.

For me, I'm crazy about European trains... we "have it" over here for diesel freight, but Europe definitely "has it" for electric. :) And I miss GG1's and E44's big time, so enough said!

I took the liberty of including some good links for European sites from my Yahoo group. These guys are *good.*

BR146.de
Huge archive of just about every class of modern European electrics. Updated daily. Excellent links page.
http://www.br146.de

Bahn2001.de
Oliver Peist's archive-he is good!
http://www.bahn2001.de/

Das Digital Eisenbahn Foto Archive
(German) The best photo archive in Europe. Better have broadband! Slow, but worth it. Gotta register but then you can d/l BIG pictures.
http://schienenfahrzeuge.netshadow.at/db/index.php

Railcolor.net
Beautiful site for modern European electrics. (English)
http://www.railcolor.net/index.html

Railfaneurope.net Picture Gallery
Where you start for Europe.

Torsten's Eisenbahnseiten
(German) Many hi-res pics.

zu-den-zuegen.de
Frank Bachmann's site-*really* excellent pics.

Most are in German but you can learn your way around. Bilder = picture, "startseite = home page, Sonderserien = miscellaneous, galerie = gallery.

And lest I forget:

Pilbara Railway Pages
Toad Montgomery's Aussie site-more heavy ore hauling than you can handle! (GE's and EMD's) Really goos stuff.

Maybe one of the mods here can make this a sticky so we keep the links from getting buried. I'm not kidding-these guys know what they are doing and have done an excellent job on their sites. Have fun!
