View Full Version : Changes along the DM&E

Just heard from several sources that major changes will be occurring along the DM&E's Waseca Subdivision in the near future. The 276/277 trains (Huron, SD to Bensenville, IL) will no longer run between Owatonna, MN and Minnesota City, MN. Rather, they will turn south at Owatonna Jct and run down to Plymouth Jct to Nora Jct then to Marquette then into Chicago from there and vice versa. I don't have much when it comes to the details as to why they are deciding to do this especially considering they just recently sunk millions into the line between Owatonna and Rochester, MN to upgrade to welded rail as well as nearly double the length of their siding in Dodge Center, MN specifically for the purpose of allowing longer 276/277 trains to meet. Would love to hear what others on here think about this change. To me, this is very disturbing news seeing as I grew up along that portion of the line and watched DME trains run through my backyard as a kid.

Here are some photos one may no longer be able to get if this becomes a reality.

The wrath of E. Hunter Harrison has only just begun......
I'm not overly familiar with DME ops, is this the only road train on this line?

The 276 and 277 are the daily east and west trains. For the Waseca Sub portion of the line, crews run the 276 from Waseca, MN to Minnesota City, MN (just outside of Winona, MN). The 277 runs opposite of that. In addition, there is the occasional ethanol train (not familiar with a schedule) and then the Rochester way-freight which serves a handful of industries along the line, McNeilus Steel being one of them. Lastly there is the Waseca to Rochester way-freight which picks up anything the Rochester local was unable to do. Sure hope this is just one big bad rumor but it would not surprise me one bit if the changes occurred.
