1. ES44ACs and DCs are the newest General Electric locomotives, they each have a GEVO 12 Cylinder engine that produces 4400 horsepower. The difference is ES44ACs have an alternator that supplies power to the traction motors, while ES44DCs have a generator that supplies power to the traction motors.
2. Union Pacific ES44ACs are just like BNSF ES44ACs, they have a GEVO 12 engine that supplies power to an alternator that powers the traction motors. The AC4400CW-CTE is a slightly older version that has a 16-cylinder GE 7FDL engine, which produces 4400 Horsepower. The CTE designates special computer software in the locomotive.
3. Big Boys weigh(ed) 1.2 million pounds (1,200,000 LBs) with tender.
4. Metra trains only run in Chicago because Metra is the commuter railroad of Chicago, serving many suburbs on 12 railroad lines, most of them freight-owned lines.
5. Metrolink is the commuter railroad of Los Angeles, California.
6. TGV trains do not run in America, however, similar "bullet trains," called Acelas do run in the Northeastern USA. They operate on the electrified Northeast Corridor, and are owned by Amtrak.
7. I'm not sure how many cars a Big Boy can pull, but I've heard that one could pull a 5-mile long train on level track (however, they were used in the Rocky Mountains and probably never hauled trains that long.)
8. Montana Rail Link owns mostly only SD40-2s because it makes maintenence a whole lot easier, only having one type of locomotive to maintain. However, they have ordered 13 EMD SD70ACes which will soon be delivered. A full roster can be foound here: http://www.its.caltech.edu/~timharri/mrl.html#Power_Roster_and_Pictures_of_MRL_Motive_P ower

Slight correction here- Both models use altenators. ES44AC's have an AC traction system. ES44DC's have a DC traction system.

Older GE's (before "Dash 7") had a poorer reputation in the US as well. A mechanical department friend of mine said that the GE traction motor and generator were superior to EMD but the control systems and the older FDL engines were problematic.

SP had bought the first production low-nose U25B's in 1962 and they were pretty much side lined by the late 1970's. SP had a successful GP9 rebuild program underway and decided to remanufacture two U25s that were ditting on a dead line. The resulting U25BE (Electrical upgrade) was a good unit but too expensive to replicate. They spent their lives around Los Angeles in local service.

A similar experiment was the three U25B's that Morrison Knudson rebuilt into TE-70-4's. The GE traction motors and main generator remained but the GE diesel was replaced by a Sulzer engine. These units had a number of novel features such as hydraulically-powered radiator fans but were not as successful as the U25BE's and only worked a few years.

I'm not familair with the equipment shown in your message. Looks similiar to the experimental Alstom/Bombardier turbine locomotive built for the US.

Here is EMD's current website dealing with European equipment.

I have an Olympus 35mm SLR camera but haven't used it in years.

hi there,
if you want you can join the mailing list of that website. The mailing list is administered by Yahoogroups, and we have more than 2000 fans over there. It is open to foreign enthusiasts, although it make take you time to blend as topics are restricted to Indian Railways. Maybe folks over there might help you getting started with your own Egyptian site. Here is the link to recent uploads

hi there,
i won't be able to provide you info about technical specifications, as I am more of interested in operations and routes etc. But you can get all the info of the very well compiled FAQ provided on that site
http://www.irfca.org/faq/index.html
As for guage, mostly we have "broad guage", whatever remaining "meter guage" is rapidly being converted into former. We too have some stretches of "narrow guage" like the Darjeeling Himalalyan Railway, which has been declared World Heritage Site by UN. Hence cannot be changed/upgraded. We have fair amoung of doubling of lines and electrification on almost all major routes.
Feel free to visit that FAQ site, you'll find a lot of information over there.
Looking forward to more of photos of your home country.
thanks
