View Full Version : Hampton & Branchville loses last customer

It's been said on both the Carolina Rails YahooGroup and Trainorders that the Hampton & Branchville ran their last coal train last week to the SCE&G plant in Canadys, SC. On the 28th, they brought the empties back. SCE&G plans to close one plant down and convert the other two to natural gas.

The H&B had a fleet of high hood GPs, some in N&W and Chessie paint.

That is the gospel, Joe. Word of the last train operating was confirmed by a friend who spoke with the owner of the H&B. 12/28/12 was the last movement, bringing empty coal hoppers from Canadys to Hampton.

That brings an end to 111 years of operation for the H&B-- a rare example of what I call a "true original" in the shortline world: a line which never went through acquisition by a Class 1 before being spun off again to a shortline operator.

I saw this railroad many, many times over the years, yet still only have roster shots to show for it. I did once see their SW1000 returning from switching the lumber mill (now closed) in Hampton when I was younger, but that wasn't "cool enough" to shoot. I wanted a coal train. Yeah...

As an update, anyone looking to swing through and shoot the remaining roster of the H&B at Miley, SC is out of luck. All 8 locomotives have been moved inside the fence at the power plant in Canadys, SC for secure storage. Chances are, this will be their final resting place unless they are sold while the line is still serviceable or can be trucked out.

Do you have any information on the old U6Bs? I have always heard they were shoved on a track near Miley and later becaome overgrown in the woods. I never knew if this was true or not.

I saw those for myself about 10 years ago. They were stored in the siding at a closed chemical plant (Du Coa) just west of the shops at Miley. Unless the photo on Google Earth is horribly outdated, I'd say a story of them being overgrown is pretty far fetched.

I do not know for certain if they are still there, however.

Not that I'm aware of. I will pass through Canadys again in late December and will report anything I see, or if I hear of something sooner.

During a visit to the H&B in the 80s (uncertain of year unless I can located the chromes) the real prize was that they had a track inspection CAR, some type of a sedan on flanged wheels. The H&B folks opened up the doors of a shop so we could shoot it. Never seen one before or since outside photos and museums.

Oh yea they had those interesting little GEs to.

Palmetto Railways (SC Public Railways) is reviving this line:

There is presently no traffic on the line, and this mostly appears to be a preservation for future industrial development. However, I have heard a locomotive will be sent to the line, so that could indicate some sort of traffic will be present. My assumption would be car storage.

What happened to the H&B motive power after operations ended? I know for a while, it was stored at the powerplant for safe keeping.

Power was sent to a rebuild shop in Monroe, GA, as of yet nothing has been done with the power.
