This one just for fun-I know there are probably similar threads.

Here's your chance to sound off! Let's hear what your one
favorite, macho, dirty, workaholic, masculine, haul-ass, I-can-pull-it diesel loco is! Be nice if you include a photo link.

Mine would have to be Alco C-636 with Hi-Ad trucks. SD70ACE
a close second.

I'd have to say any end-cab switcher. It's just awesome to see one (or two) grab 10,000 feet of train and drag it around. Granted, it will move slowly, but the sound is always awesome. The only shots I have of any end cab switchers are of the EMD MP15DC. The following is a shot taken last August in Danville:

For me, the GP30 is my favorite just because of the way it looks! Some still live and serve on some class 1s and shortlines after 42 years.

I know most of you guys are against those GE's, but i am a real fan of them. Out here in the desert all i ever see is those EMD SD70M's, there cool when there clean but i am getting SD70'd out. I love it when the GE's pull through. There loud, they make alot of smoke which is awesome and they have that signature GE cugging sound. Heres an example:

Here's my pick, though it's not my favorite, it certainly is macho, dirty, worked a lot, hauled a lot and was definitely not feminine-

It's the Baldwin Lima center cab transfer units. If anything, it was downright ugly looking...

On the Pennsylvania, they pushed, shoved, pulled just about everything with little thanks. They only lasted about 20 years before they were gone...

That little switcher was pounding away and making a racket. :) Also reminds me of the Union when I was in Pittsburgh, using 5-6 end cabs on coke trains.

Mine is a close relative to yours. I'd have to go with an ALCO C-630 with Hi-Ad trucks, they'll out-pull almost anything in the barn, the only problem is that on the rare occasion that anything breaks, you'll have a helluva time finding parts. Other than that, their one of the most reliable, maintenance free (older) locomotives you'll find, that is if you take care of them. Also, to me the only locomotive more ashtetically pleasing than a 630 is a PA.

Major problem with the U50C's was their extensive use of aluminium wiring. Just as in residential construction, the wiring would expand and contract as it heated / cooled and eventually the contacts would deteriorate causing resistance and fires. Las time I saw one was in St. Louis in 1978. A local steel plant was using one during a power shortage to run the mill.

wow...i saw that engine in a model railroader magazine for sale, and didnt think that it was a real engine...but man those engines are HUGE!!! is a DD40 bigger? A DD40 is bigger than a SD90 right?

DDA40X's are the longest diesels, they only lasted 15 years though.

im egyptian but i like also american railroads the best loco that i like in american locos is the sd70m but i also like aloco from here in egypt and i will attac the pic of it to show all of my friends an egyptian loco

And then there is the standard U50 riding on four 2-axle trucks connected by span bolsters. See UP photo below.

The links will show you a couple of others. Number 44512 shows one at Taylor yard with a GP30 and GP9. The U50's spent their later years in drag service between Los Angeles' Taylor Yard and West Colton. Imagine the "pleasure" of riding in a cab just inches from the horizontal gear-driven radiator fan (sounds like an airplane propellor at higher throttle settings) and the traction motor blower. Note too how SP installed nose doors on their three U50's.

Photo 101400 show another at West Colton accompanied by a GP35 and a rare U28C. The latter was bought for Kaiser Ore Train service between Ferrum (near Salton Sea) and Kaiser (San Bernardino). They also worked as helpers over Beaumont and Tehachapi and as LA-WC haulers.
