Save The Wave

Sundays are usually fairly busy on CSX, but getting to the yard at 7:30 saw not a thing moving. Headed north to Princeton to see if anyone was awake on NS.
On the way up, Q515 was passing south through Princeton, so I got a shot of him at Kings. Junk power, but a train none the less.

To the left of the engine you can see construction underway to add a second main.
I drove on in to Princeton and sat along the CSX/NS interlock and the scanner was dead. Finally I heard a train going in the hole at Decker IN so Q121 could pass. It finally made it to Princeton, and I was stupid enough to waste some megapixels on it.

Boredom finally set in, so I headed east with the intent to check out the AW&W where some NS coal trains have moved out of lately. On the way I found NS 70N getting a coal refill at the Francisco mine.

I surveyed the old AW&W tipple and loading area and they were all dormant. I guess NS must be storing empties there until they're called for. In looking around I found a couple abandoned cars including this monitor car.

Since there was still no scanner traffic I headed north to ISRR Ashby Yard in Petersburg IN to hopefully catch some red & gold. I was rewarded with two engines that were somewhat visible from the road. The first required several mm of zoom, so much that it's heat warped.

On the way to find the AWW stuff, I heard a dispatcher telling CSX V501 he would be at Decker for an hour and then go to the mine at Hazelton. I left Petersburg and headed towards Hazelton, hoping the timing would be about right. It was. 501 was coming off the main to the wye so i found a spot to shoot.

The coal train that was filling at Francisco was on the move from Princeton, so I dropped in at Lyles and got a shot.

He had the Princeton yard office call PSI to see if they could enter on the east side, which means he wouldn't be crossing in to IL. I headed that way in hopes of catching it again on the overpass.

I thought there might be a chance he would drop his cars and pass back over the Wabash and come back through IL, so I headed back to the bridge. To call this area rural would be an understatement. Desolute river bottoms. I got to the bridge, but no train. Snapped a shot of the bridge anyway.

My railfan buddy called again, he was in Princeton so I was headed in to meet him when I heard NS 239 heading west. I got back to Lyles for a shot.

We joined forces in Princeton and headed out to the Toyota wye. Light power from 70N came back through the yard, and he was told to stop on the main at East Douglas for 29N to come in and drop off racks at Toyota. We headed out for a shot.

We heard NS 167 clearing the Lyles detector and coming in to Princeton. We headed over to the NS/CSX diamond to get a shot.

Two big blue's in a row.
This train had two of the engines that went west yesterday on 375.

Traffic died again, so we tried heading back towards Evansville. Finally the silence broke, S596 was coming north. We shot over to Ft. Branch and set up for a shot. I used the big zoom on a tripod, but not a good idea with the low amount of light.

We got back to Howell, and there was a grain train sitting at Claremont heading north. I headed up Reitz Hill for a shot as he passed downtown E'ville.

Back at the yard, Q592 had a GP38-2 YN3 on the point.

As he moved out of the way, it set up a nice shot of Q596, the last shot of the day.
