View Full Version : In Search of fall color

Today I got out early. I left my place around 6:45 am and I headed west up into the Berkshires in search of fall color along the CSX Boston Line. Of course it was a cloudy day, not a surprise around here lately. I arrived at MP QB 128 ( Middlefield, MA ) about 7:30 am. As soon as I was getting out of the car I heard dynamics coming down the hill. To late, the train was already rolling by me. Boy where the brakes on fire, hard to slow down on wet rail when your coming downgrade. Luckly I didnt have to wait long for the next train. Roughly 8 am, i heard dynamics off in the distance. Q274 was coming around the corner with two leasers and an old B36-7 for a cab signal leader.

About 20 min goes by and another welcoming sound, dynamics of another eastbound. This next eastbound was Q264 another rack train with two lease units and an old B36-7 as an add on leader. I opted for a diffrent shot for this one. I wanted to frame the train with some fall foliage.

Q119 would be the first westbound by me. He had no trouble climbing the grade with a light train of pigs.

I moved up the mountain to Becket, MA at MP QB 134. I found the color was getting better and better as I moved up the mountain. Now I played the waiting game. I waited and waited and waited at the spot I was going to shoot at. I watched the sun teasing me as It would come out and go in and then finally stay in behind the clouds. I grabbed a shot of it illuminating the colors on the mountain.

After a long wait I heard Q424 call the NB dispatcher letting them know they'll need a cab back to Selkirk after they get into West Springfield. It didnt take long for the train to get to me. For some reason the train had the door wide open and no ditch lights on, maybe trying to air out the crapper?

Standing on my feet for over 3 hours I couldnt wait to get back to the truck and head for another location west of my current. I went up to the Summit of Washington Hill and found the color to be great there as well. Another waiting game. About an hour after I arrived I heard a horn blowing for the crossing down at Becket where I previously was signalling a westbound climbing. 5 minutes later Q283 comes around the corner with a sweet sound of a pure EMD consist.

20 minutes or so behind Q283 was Q427 climbing hard upgrade with two GE's and two EMD's.

Then shot him as he was going around the S-Curve heading for the summit.

Overall it was a good day despite the clouds. I'd like to try another trip like this again on Monday and im hoping for some sun.

Cool pics. Despite the clouds, they look good anyway.

These pics are proof the sun does not have to be shining for good photography. Nice stuff.

My favorite picture of yours is the CSX SD70 with the door open! Do you think that has a shot at entering the database?

I'd try entering that last S-curve shot because of the interesting angle. Although its a going-away shot and a cloudy day, it might have a chance.

Thanks for the comments folks. I tried to get a few shots in but no luck. However one did make it in, which was the one of the B36-7 bracketed by the yellow maple tree and birch tree. Im going to be out on Thursday and the forecast shows sun so maybe I can try some locations again with some sun to bring out the fall colors.
