Even after spending 24 hours last weekend recording everything that moved over the Second District, I decided to shoot it again this weekend. I leave the house at 0730, and head south. 283 had just arrived at Danville off of the Louisville District, and 223 was passing Harrodsburg. I head straight to Kings Mountain to meet up with fellow railfans Jonathan Guy and Mark Wurst. En route, I see the 216 near Moreland and hear 174 on the radio, later learning that the 174 had WC power (go figure). I arrive at Kings Mountain just as the rear of 174 clears the detector. Jonathan, Mark, and I hang out on the KY 501 bridge and catch northbound trains 132 and 230. Southbound 283 arrives at Kings Mountain with a BNSF Dash 9 leading a new NS "Unibrow" Dash 9.

197 is not to far behind 283, but while making a run for the grade, it went into emergency thanks to a busted air hose at South Fork. The three of us decide to drive a few miles back north to South Fork and try to shoot 197. We see that it has a Conrail SD60M for power, but it's not in a good place to get a photo. The problem gets fixed, and 197 starts to move on us unexpectedly. We hurry back to Kings Mountain and luckily arrive before it does.

With shadows looming in the cut, we decide to start moving south. On the way towards Somerset, we catch train 50G at Waynesburg with SD70 #2535 in the lead. Then at Science Hill, we catch trains I-30 and 223

Another northbound is heard on the radio as we near Somerset. We stop at Cumberland Chair and see 264 led by a former Conrail SD60M. The decision is then made to head down to Burnside and shoot a few northbounds crossing the massive bridge over Lake Cumberland. Steve Blake joins us up on the ledge and the four of us shoot the breeze in between trains. We end up seeing five here: 284, 133, 215, 229, and 112. 112 was having problems with their lead unit (NS 8392).

After the 112 passes, we decide to head down to Keno. 51E meets 112 at Grove and passes us while walking back to our vehicles. The light is fading as we view 196 from high above on the Cave Springs Rd. bridge.

It's now time to head back home. On the way back, I hear 180 on the radio while getting some supper. It met 251 at Somerset and I caught up to the end of it near Cumberland Chair. I pass the head end near Norwood, where it meets 236. It gets ahead of me at Waynesburg, but has to stop at Kings Mountain for a meet with 111 and 125. I arrive back home at around 2100, after seeing a total of 19 trains.
