350: Number of locomotives Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp. will buy in 2004, versus 200 in 2003. The reason? The provision in the recent tax bill that allows a 50 percent bonus depreciation, which lets companies write off their capital purchases much more quickly.

Another reason might be to get an order in before new EPA "Tier 2" emissions limits take effect in 2005. The new designs are expected to cost more and may lose a little in performance.
