1. Bad Cropping
2. Backlit

Can I make these better?

1) Yes by maybe giving a liitle more breathing room at the bottom of the photo. Also, if you have the entire length of the train, that might help to include that.

2) Not sure, as you are on the 'wrong side' of the UP train. Kudos for thinking outside of the box though!

I agree with Ween... give that first train a "place to go" and you stand a good chance of getting it accepted.

Second one ...you're on the dark side of both trains, so probably file that one.

I agree with the analysis on the first shot, but not on the second.

RP often dings shots for being back lit, but usually it's because there are other problems with the shot. Probably 25% of my shots are back lit and there are plenty of other back lit shots posted by other shooters. The key is in the composition.

The shadows of the UP train make the dark side interesting and the overlapping meet wouldn't work if shot from the other side. The problem is you are cropped too tight. If you did it in camera, you are out of luck, but if you shot it wider, show it that way. You need more of the Metra train and you need some space on the right side of the photo.

Even as is, I like it.
