1. Original photo
2. How I cropped it

I was just wondering if anybody has a better way to crop this photo?

It looks like you put the train right in the middle of the photo vertically speaking. While I'm not one for the 'rule' of thirds, I would include more ground and put the train higher up in the shot (you could put more sky, less ground, but I prefer ground since all I get up here is sky).

One other thing to note as mentioned in a previous thread, the trucks of the first unit are starting to become hidden behond the rails in the foreground, the but the fact that it's a 'rare' sight might override that concern...

Much, much better! It's more pleasing to the eye (mine anyways). Good luck!

Keegan,

Much better, but you may still get nicked for "high sun" or "back-lit."

I realize it's a (fairly) rare combo so you may not get another chance, but consider taking along a short step ladder when you railfan. If you were up even one or two feet, the foreground tracks would no longer be hiding the trucks. It also does wonders for weed control too, although if the farmer doesn't mind, I would go and cut down some of the weed clumps along the edge of the ballast.

Anyway, good luck.

Keegan,

I'd just like to add that this is quite possibly the best photo I have seen of this consist so far. I really like the composition.

I agree. That new crop gives the shot so much depth...

Hope you appealed it! It's a rare combo for our neck of the woods, and the only thing not well lit is the nose. The trucks all seem to be pretty well covered. If I might suggest though, try adjusting the contrast on the cyan channel, and at the same time possibly try darkening the tone of the cyan channel. It seems as if a lot of the good color in the sky is a little washed out; that may help offset the effects of the high sun.

Just crop it tightly to the engines and resubmit the version you like. Work on the lighting so it doesn't look like "high sun" or backlit and you'll have a CHANCE.
