Just did some searches of the database, so far:

VA - 216
KY - 201
PA - 100
MD - 62
CA - 48
WV - 35

looks like most pics come from KY/VA border area, which I guess is where Chris/Chris/E M Bell live :-)

I guess I kinda like it the way it is...western stuff never has done much for me. Except the WP...now that...hmm...

Happy Holidays...

Shoot, its nice to see "our" part of The US get a little coverage somewhere...it seems that most of the major rail mags seem to forget that we exist! I am loving all of this regional coverage myself, but it will soon balance out Im sure, as the word spreads..

Yes, I did post it to the western board but I have a feeling that Todd 'locked' the post so no one could reply to it.

Did you post a notice on the TO western board?

[quote="ddavies"]The center of the universe has shifted west and north :-)

To borrow a line form the Southern Rwy, I would prefer to look South, once you go east of K.C. and south of Cincy. you can forget it. This isn't a bad thing thought because nobody knows what we have south of the Mason Dixon. :)

There are 78 pictures posted of railroading in New Mexico, which isn't bad considering the small population. It's great watching trains in the Southwest; many people still have a healthy, "Ain't nobody's business if you do." attitude to life there. Train spotting on the East Coast means constant harassment from cops and/or criminals. And that's not just a post 911 thing. :(

Now with 30,000 total pictures, thought I'd look at the data again.

PA 3123
KY 2329

CA 1706
TN 1647
VA 1554
WI 1276

I find it interesting that WV, with mountain crossings by B&O, C&O and N&W is so low on the list

Well Nevada only has 85 photos courtesy of eleven different rail fans. But I still enjoy taking pictures out west.....I'll do my best to help Nevada catch up with those Eastern states....

I think WV is so low on the list because most of the WV shots show up under VA for some reason now. I pointed this out about a month ago but it's still happening. All of my shots from the Pokey from October are listed under VA even-though I selected WV from the pull down. I think this is throwing things off somewhat.

I'm surprised by Pennsylvania. I knew it was up there but not #1 and by far too. I'm also fairly surprised about New York. I didn't know that many were from New York. Probably because its the "gateway" state to New England. I thought Illinois would have #1 since all of the class one railroads go there and they have many short lines, also. Interesting! :)

It's not really surprising that PA is first with photos
in the database. Most of us here grew up near
the railroads and are inspired by its rich history
and heritage in the Keystone state. Besides,
we have a great variety of topography, two major
cities, and many rivers to use as a backdrop.

In addition, with the crappy season the Steelers
are having, I'd rather be outside photographing
trains on a Sunday afternoon. :)

wow..yall are digging waayyyyy back to start this thread again :)

PA being number numero uno is almost a given...It seems that everybody..even a ol country boy like me....goes to shoot in PA..Great scenery and lots of trains make it a popular place. KY being second is about the same. There are probably more photogs from the Bluegrass state that contribute to this site than from any other area, at least 9 or 10 that I can think of right off (and we all seem tlo live in the same area to boot)

glad to see you using the forums again Mr Davies....

Or what about China! There they have recently opened a MagLev train for commercial usage! That German MagLev just keeps on running large circles on a testtrack.

Peter, have you been to the Emsland test track?? On video it looks really cool!

When I went to Shanghai Pudong Airport, the Transrapid wasn't finished yet! :x

Now they are building another from Munich Airport to Munich HBF (Central Station). When I went to Munich, they didn't even think about the plan yet.

I have not visited it (yet). It is quite a long trip, at least 5 hours so I am waiting for some more money and time. Besides, at the moment it is not really that interesting anyway. They are testing something new I read on their website and it has not been qualified for passenger operations.
At the end of the year it shoud reopen for passengers. Maybe that I'll go next year or the year after.

Heck, if I wait long enough I may not even have to leave the country to get in a Mag Lev! The transport department is considering to implement a Mag Lev line between Schiphol and Groningen (via Amsterdam, Almere and Lelystad).
Another line they are considering is a large circle linking the 4 largest cities in the Netherlands. Amsterdam - Utrecht - Rotterdam - Den Haag (The hague) - Schiphol Airport - Amsterdam.

The plans are far from certain now. Other possibilities are a convential train service and a HST service.

I did not know about the plans for a Munich airport link! That may make a future (long term) plane-spotting trip all the more appealing!

Interestingly the number of pics per railroads are inverse to the number of locos they run*:

UP 7,515

BNSF 5,610

CSX 3,464

(and by a small margin with CSX) NS 3,447.

All rosters are without slugs, fuel tenders and leased units.

Been awhile since I pounded the server for state data. PA has taken over the #1 spot, trailed by CA and IL. Now this only represents where the people live (or shoot) that submit pics to RP, not where the most trains are.

I would expect the most pics from CA and PA, where the RRs cross mountains and there are a lot of people who live nearby. I am surprised that WV has so few, with the B&O, C&O and N&W mains all crossing that state in beautiful country (for shooting).

Not surprised about Wisconsin moving up the list...#4, and it's going to blast past Kentucky here pretty soon. (Please don't let it happen!!)

Mr. Bell needs to get out from behind the monitor and get out there! Speaking of our Bluegrass state contributors, I haven't seen much from Caleb Herndon as of late.

Mr. Herndon??

Hey now, I went out a couple weekends ago and uploaded a few. I have started a new job ( Same for Caleb) and havnt had as much time to get out as we used to. PA can take the top spot...afterall, its quality, not quanity that matters :)

Mr. Herndon??

Yessir? :-D I'm still around, dude.

I have a few photos from last Sunday that I really should get around to uploading, along with well over 100 non-rail related photos  that I need to sort through. I guess I'm expanding my horizons now.

We'll try not to. That's just wrong if it does. But like Emmett said, it's quality over quanity.

Going in the opposite direction, here are the states with the lowest number of photos in the database:

DE 81
AK 98
ND 100

70% of the 100 total North Dakota photos are mine. Otherwise, North Dakota would be #47, ahead of only Rhode Island and Hawaii. Take that, South Dakota!!!!!

And BTW, better watch out Vermont and Idaho...North Dakota is gunning for you next!!!!
