NS installed a new siding at Saulsbury, TN (about 60 miles E of Memphis - MP 494.2 in the Memphis District) with steel cross ties. The beefed up siding is for the increased coal traffic expected after January 1st when BNSF will be taking over the runs from UP. I found it quite impressive.

Is this a test section NS is doing to evaluate the new style ties, or are the all the way through the new siding? I am almost surprized to hear the NS is doing this...they have shunned away from concrete ties and other forms of "evolution". in the past.

The steel ties are all the way throughout the siding.

In the Tehachapi Loop, where the tunnel goes under the loop itself, they use steel ties because they have a lower profile. This increases the total height of the tunnel allowing for taller trains. But I don't understand why NS went to steel ties, though. I mean, the siding is right in the open so there is no need for lower profile ties. Maybe there is some sort of advantage that steel ties have over concrete or wooden ties?
