A while back there had been some discussion about how having a DeLorme topo map was very 'handy' while railfanning. I stumbled upon this site last week and found they are offering free shipping through Dec. 10....so if you are in the market for some maps, here is a good chance to get one:

Another good place to look is www.amazon.com . I've gotten some good prices for my maps there.

Also, www.mapquest.com isn't a bad place to get maps either

Yeah... but it's hard to carry the computer for mapquest in your car. :D

Or just hook a GPS unit up to your laptop....that coupled with a good mapping program is very effective!!

A year ago I made myself purchase a DeLORME Topo USA 3.0 program for my computer. It cost me $100, but as a railfan it was well worth it. It has every state in the country. It shows yards and the names of yards, stations ect. My favorite pick.

Here's the setup I carry for out-of-town rail excursions:

It's equipped (now) with DeLorme Street Atlas USA and works superb for finding out of the way shooting locations.
