Yeah it would be something if i could take a trip to egypt and see some trains at on time i was supposed to go to israel but that didnt work out cause of all the fighting going on over there

Im sure Alex that you will like the Egyptian trains if you come. Most of the units are EMD.Also you will find alot of friendly crews. And Egyptian Railways said that they will buy 60 new locos so i hope that they are EMD too.

I clicked neither; I'm a shortline kind of person. If I had to chose I would pick NS because I am all for anything dealing with the "Middle Division" aka the NS Pittsburgh Line.

As a photographer, I hate 'em both. NS has the most unimagintive paint scheme of any railroad, and CSX wouldn't dare care to maintain their equipment so it might look good for more than 20 minutes after new.

As a rail fan, NS would get the nod because they are a nicely managed operation (at least these days).

NS-Need I say more!

I'd rather have the Reading, Lehigh Valley and Erie Lackawana, but since they haven't been around for 30 years, I'll take NS. There paint schemes are boring, but at least the engines are well maintained.

I like the way CSX looks, so I guess CSX.

CSX! More railfan friendly! Better looking! AC6000CW's! More public relations! More open to cab-rides! AC6000CW's! More variety of power! Nicer to shoot! AC6000CW's! Oh, and AC6000CW's!!!

i prefer NS because they are in my area more often (CN St Thomas, NS Trains 327 and 328), although that's rumoured to be ending very soon. But i saw alot of NS and N&W engines growing up, so I prefer them over CSX...

overall I prefer CN, but that's just cause I'm Canadian

If we're voting in the capacity of operations, then NS gets my vote ... hands down. In my nine years of railroading, I've dealth with CSX and NS. CSX has got to be the most poorly managed railroad in the Eastern United States. NS has forgotten more about running a railroad than CSX will ever be able to acheive.

It still strikes me as odd that we as railfans would have a favorite. But, yeah, I guess I have had a favorite. For a long time, it was CSX just because of the foreign power on the Atlanta to Hamlet, NC line as well as leasors and the such. But I admitt that the NS "black oil" ("X Files" reference there) has grown on me a lot. And I've got to say that I might just kill to see some old classic NS power that was around in 99 and 2000 that I didn't shoot because of the paint scheme.

Now that's just plain stupid to me now.

But give me a shortline, any shortline, any day before a Class 1!

Guys, keep in mind that Norfolk Southern is a better run company, yet CSX is more friendly and open to railfans. Don't bash or hate on CSX too much, at least they run trains. And they also have more business as far as the auto industry goes, per year than NS (from what I've heard).

But if you guys want some retro/classic Norfolk Southern power, go to the "Juniata Repair Shops" in Altoona, PA. I shot a classic GE B23-7 high hood there, NS 4011 coupled with five ex-N&W/SR SD50's. This was in May 2006, I do believe those units are still there.......as they are on the deadline......sniff, sniff.
