That would be the only surviving Southern Pacific AC class cab forward steam locomotive, on Display at the CA state RR musem..

Thanks EM Bell and Mike. That is one strange looking steam engine.

When I first saw the frontal shot today I thought it was some new diesel locomotive. :lol:

Heres the deal. These steam engines, commonly known as "cab forwards" or "mallys" were used only by the Southern Pacific. They were mostly used on the Tehachapi pass, because of all the tunnels, the smoke from the common steam loco would come to the engineers in the cab, and make them sick because of smoke inhale. To solve this problem SP ordered nearly 200 cab forwards (4100-4294) with the cab in front and the smoke would come from the rear. The one in Sacromento was the most modern version of the Cab Forwards before SP stopped using them.

These locomotives provided excellent visibility for both passenger and freight crews in the tunnels in the Siskous and Tehachapis as well as the snow sheds of the Sierras. They were also used east of Los Angeles. Crews were probably ever-mindful that the cab contained high pressure steam piping and even a minor head on collision could be a disaster.

4294 is the last SP Cab-Forward in existance - it spent many years outside on display in a Sacramento park where the tender deck was filled with trash and camping materials left by homeless people. As I recall it was the last AC-12 built (by Baldwin during WWII).
