I have always prefered a pair bib overallls (denim..not those cheesey pin striped ones). They are the most comfortable item of clothing evry made!! The are perfect for getting dirty, in the winter you can put longjohns or sweat pants under them to stay warm, and a sweat shirt to. When I worked on steam, the layers of clothing would help protect from burns and such, and they where loose enough to keep you from sweating to much.

The bibs where tradtional clothing for most engine crews in the USA, and are perfect for the job. Besides what I said above, I love all the pockets..places to put you wallet, train orders, switch list ect, plenty of room for a wiping rag or two, tobbaco, gerber, pens, pocket watch and what ever else you wanted to pack.
