Many excellent photos were taken in 2003,
testament to the skill of the photographers
who contribute to RailPictures.Net.

Here are ten of my favorite photos of last year:

Snow-covered mountains form a backdrop for
Dave Hawkinís photo at Tehachapi:

Tim Wakeman earns a well deserved POTW for
this winter scene:

Chris Nevard captures the Flying Scotsman in a setting
Charles Dickens might have recognized:

A splendid winter scene captured by Chris Starnes:

A gem of a photo. Rob Benkovitzís 14 minute exposure
of a BNSF train climbing the hill at Tehachapi Loop:

Tom Johnsonís extraordinary photo of a side-lit Illinois
Central freight train at Masonville, Iowa:

A BNSF consist heads west into the setting sun in
this photo by M.J. Scanlon:

Fall photos donít get much prettier than this one by
Curtis Wininger:

Robby Vaughn captures the mood of the Appalachian
Coal country with this B&W shot from WV:

There were many others I thought were superb as well.
But those listed above demonstrate for the most part
that the best photos require some forethought and
planning and a little bit of luck as well.
