Hi guys,
The new video site, http://www.rail-videos.net/ is live, and ready for your video contributions!
We hope you'll enjoy this new addition to our network and, as always, please let us know what you think in this thread! :)
Thanks!

It's cool, although I wish my Elite membership here carried over to the other site :)
I hope it's as successful as railpictures has been, thank you for finding a way for me to spend more time online.

Of course you do. ;)
Unfortunately, the video site will be even more bandwidth intensive than this one, so it wasn't possible to allow Elite membership to carry over. We're about to invest in a new 50mbps connection for video downloads from the new site, and that isn't cheap. The high quality videos which Elite members have access to are about 5-10x larger than the medium size, and to justify that extra bandwidth outlay, we need to get at least some of the cost of that bandwidth back. Hope you understand. :)

I understand - I figured it was worth asking for anyways...
The only problem I have now is that I need to get myself a camcorder. Damn you Kilroy!

Good stuff, looks really cool, Chris! Im going to have to get my video camera fixed so I can start uploading footage to my computer. I think I have a couple of clips laying around though that I can upload.
Take Care,

Chris--
You wouldn't happen to have a list of the possible rejection reasons, do you?
This new site looks cool. I like the fact that the user names/passwords are the same as RP.net (is this also the same on JP.net, out of curiousity?). Now I truly can't wait for my new high speed internet to arrive ;)

But where can I go to see airplane videos.... : )
Best of luck on your endeavor, guys.
Looks like a sure thing.

Chris--

There isn't a list, per se. Any rejected video will have a hand-typed explanation. Right now we're basically concentrating on steadiness of the video (rejecting hand-held videos where the camera's bouncing all around), sound quality (some videos have really bad sound issues, such as crackling, etc.) and light (too dark).

I seem to have a problem.
I started uploading my favorite video (And my first video that was planned) but because it's 60 megs (Just under the limit) and my internet connection is slow, by the time it's gotten online, I've timed out and get a "Bad user data"
Maybe I should just stick to stills?

Any chance of a "Mail your Video in on CD" service?
Just a thought,
Christine.

You could open a new window and navigate through the website every so often. That should prevent your login from timing out...

The library's of many state universities (at least in MD) are open to the public. I work in one and we had opera singers using our computers to upload video. You could burn it on a CD at home.

My videos seem to be too large. Any help on ways I could resize them would be appreciated.

I have to be honest ... and what I'm saying is not meant to offend anyone.
I'm not impressed with the video idea. Once the locomotives have passed, there really isn't much to see on most trains.
It's just railcars going by on a tiny scrunched up screen.
There is no way this ever going to come close to or match
Railpictures.net. I'm sticking with still shots.
I'll take the train going by in real life as a by-product.

I don't think anyone is expecting that, but I also wouldn't use that as a benchmark of success. Very few niche hobby sites ever become as popular as this one has, with over 50,000 daily viewers. With about 5,000 daily viewers in its second day of existence (today) , I think Rail-Videos has already proven that there's a market for what it offers.
I love the art of still photography, but I also love raw video of trains, especially with great sounds that I'll never otherwise have the opportunity to hear in person. To each their own. :)

Run it through Windows Movie Maker, it's a pretty quick and easy solution.

I agree with you (but also agree with Chris regarding the sounds). The videos will be only an occasional treat for me. To each, their own!

Is Windows Movie Maker only for XP? If so, I have Windows 2000.

Thanks.
Any other equivalent software that I could use?
I'm not a big video guy, but I applaud the effort by the admin to get their foot in the door by being "first". I'm sure it will be a hit, no doubt.
On a side note though, did the admin consider the abreviation for the site's name? Railpictures is usually referred to as RP.net, so that would lead Rail-Videos to be R-V.net or RV.net. First time I typed that my thought was, "Who wants to see photos of Recreational Vehicles." I'll be expecting my photos to be rejected henceforth...

Just to add my 2 pence (or cents  ) worth.
I enjoy watching a well-shot video, preferably with plenty of noise (steam or diesel), so will be dropping in for a few viewings when time permits. However, I have never felt the urge to take video myself, though my husband does do a bit. So I might be asking for some advice about getting footage from tape on to PC then onto the internet in the future

I just wanted to say thanks to RP for adding the video dimension to their website! Having good audio to go with the visual is always a plus especially with steam power. Also, I'm just dyin' to see that tractor pulling the grain hopper on video!!!

I should have quite a few videos to upload. Just need to capture some more of my camera onto my computer

Well, I take a bit of video and have had some stuff used professionally. I also do some scripting work. Looked forward to rail-videos.net but.... can't get anything to play! Surely it doesn't take 4 mins plus before something starts playing on a broadband connection? Thought maybe it was my machine - it may still be, but youtube is working fine. Maybe you're having a wee glitch tonight ( 9-45pm UK time October 4th). I'll try again in the morning. Unless anyone can tell me what the problem is at my end.....
All the best

Hey Chris,
Have you thought about allowing users to FTP the videos up? Since most FTP servers/clients support restarting, at least if you did get kicked off, you could log back in and pick up where you left off. Hopefully, that might reduce the number of half uploaded files where users got disconnected or something else happened during the upload.
Just a thought! Thanks for the great sites! :)

oh boy, you're in trouble now! I finally have an outlet for the best of my 1700-odd videos. (Don't worry, I won't submit them all.) :)
A couple of little things:
- I got the "bad user data" error but was able to recover from it by loading the main page then refreshing the submission page.
- Any chance the thumbnail selector can take a broader perspective of the whole video instead of a selection of the first 60-odd frames?
Kudos for the new service.
