View Full Version : What to do when approached while shooting video

Guys;

There's obviously a real possibility we may be approached by an LEO, a security guard or a citizen while out shooting video. Here are a few things to remember if/when this happens to you --

1.) Roll video the whole time. You don't need to be behind the camera. You don't even need to point the camera at the altercation. Just record the audio of the event for future possible legal action. Now if you can point the camera toward you and the LEO, that's good. But you don't need to make a big show of it. And never get in their face. The more low key you can keep it, the better.

2.) Don't instigate anything. Be nice and polite. Remember that while you're getting them on camera, you're getting you on camera too. And it does us no good to have a video on You Tube showing a railfan in bad light. Remember, if you get tased, you will probably end up on Keith Oblerman's show with the CG "Tased and confused."

3.) To repeat, don't play to the camera. Pretend it's not there and that it's not rolling. Don't try to zoom in on the LEO's badge and in fact don't be behind the camera at all.
