bhphotovideo.com usually has the best prices, largest selection, and they actually have a few helpful guides on the right mic to get.

Depends on how much you want to spend also.
I use 2 mics. Both plug directly into the camera's 3.5mm mic jack.
First I have is the Audio-Technica ATR25 Stereo Condenser Microphone. Retails for $79 but picked it up online for $35. A good mic and windscreen, and produces some very nice sound. It is a stereo mic and picks up REAL well, so even the slightest behind camera movement is caught. I like using it for my "remote" cameras that are set further from me down the track.
Second mic I have is the Rode VideoMic. Can be found for around $140 online. Nice mic that produces some very high quality sound. Aside from the cold shoe mount it also has "shock absorbers" on the mic to further cut down vibration.
I am also looking at the Azden SGM-1X ($149 at B&H). I recently saw a comparison of the Azden SGM-1X and the Rode VideoMic and while the Rode produces very high quality recordings, the Azden SGM-1X had a noticeable difference in the positive side. The only "problem" with the Azden SGM-1X is that is an XLR mic and requires the Beachtek DXA-4 ($179 at B&H) to be used on the consumer/prosumer cameras with a 3.5mm mic jack.
