I recently begin railroad photography, and I was wondering how one can find out the Train ID, one of the forms when adding a photo at Railpictures.net.

Usually by listening to a scanner you can sometimes pick out what a train's symbol is. Also, once you become familiar with the area (as far as train traffic goes) you will become more aware of what trains are coming through there.

That Train ID blank isn't required, however...that is just some extra information that you can provide if you have it.

Chris is there a basic numbering system that different RR's use?

Being in the airline business I understand how the flight numbers work but I'm struggling with Train ID's.

There's alot of train traffic in Memphis and I'm all over the scanner trying to figure it out. I've picked up on CSX's Train ID's. (I actually found a list of trains that come in and out of Memphis off the internet. It helps.) The other big three seem to confuse me. Those being UP, BNSF & NS.

Today while near BNSF's TN Yard it seemed they were calling the trains by the lead locomotives number and adding a N or S for direction.

I don't know of two class 1s whos train numbering system is the same. Its really hard to get symbols on the UP and BNSF trains, I would imagine.
