After discussing it for a couple of weeks, things fell into place for me to make a quick trip to VA this past weekend to meet up with CTS and spend some time around the Bluefield area. I hadnt been up that way for well over 10 years (not since the NS axed the steam program), so it was great to get back. Here is a rambling trip report with links to some of the better shots...

Friday, July 23rd. I slept later than expected and didnt leave KY until 1000. I made a beeline for the Corbin area hoping that CSX would be busy...instead I spent almost 2 hours watching the rails rust. Just as I was getting ready to leave, they decided to let a Southbound Coal train loose.. http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=70921

With the thrill of shooting a dirty dark future GE still fresh in my mind, I turned towards VA, meeting up with Chris around 1630. We ventured out towards Kingsport as the clouds gathered, catching a couple along the way. First up was a CSX Northbound on the KP sub, seen here at Frisco. http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=70922 and a CSX man running over the NS near Yuma, VA in the fog http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=70923

Saturday, July 24th. A early departure from Gate CIty put us in Bluefield around 0830. The radio had been dead the whole way there, and we were wondering if they planned on running anything. A quick check of the yard found a Eastbound 277 rack train ready to leave with a pair of EMD's leading, so we gave chase down towards Glyn Lynn

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=70925 277 passes the interlocking at RD, just East of the yard.

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=70931 passing the N&W depot at Oakvale

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=70933 and 277 on last time, passing the poistion light signals at Robertson.

After watching 277 head East, we started back towards Bluefield, running into a 18M with a CR leader just West of Oakvale http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=70948

17M had been trying to get up the mountain and into the yard for a couple of hours by this point. He had lost a engine near Glyn Lynn, and finally stalled on the hill just short of RD. After sitting for awhile, a Westboud that was behind him cut off and shoved them over the top. here he is passing the Coal tower at Bluefield. http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=70952

By now it was almost 1300 and we took a break for lunch while waiting for the Westbounds to leave. We headed out on the pokey to see what we could find, and quickly ran into a mine run at Flat Top yard...with a former N&W GP38ac leading... http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=70956 After watching them shuffle around for awhile, 88G was getting close, so we headed for the bridge near Bramwel for a shot. http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=70959 , then chased him out to Northfork. I had shot the 611 years ago on a Eastbound trip here, and was saddened to see that all of the old buildings that had lined the tracks have been torn down. O. Winston Link had made this little town famous in one of his awseome night shots, but now there is just not much left. http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=70961 (just for fun, here is a shot of the 611 at the same location 12 years prior http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=11909 )

By now, the sun was getting low, and the shadows creeping in. We turned East towards home, bagging Two more along the way. A 148 had passed us at North Fork, but the light was all wrong. We managed a shot of him (with a UP/DRGW duo) at Flat Top. http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=70963 The last train of the day was a J55 pusher set at Falls Mill, returning West after helping a Eastbound into Bluefield. http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=70965

Not a bad day all in all, and it has me longing to spend a few more days in the area....
