This Raillink/ GEXR ex. VIA unit I think is probably one of my favourite locomotives. What is your favourite locomotive?

I am debating whether or not I should change my mind on that favorite unit thing. I really love the EMD DDA40X units. Even tho I have never seen one, all the pictures of them look really impressive. The sheer size and all. Has there ever been a bigger diesel manufactured, I didnt think so, but I have been wrong on several things!

For me, it really depends on how well the locomotive is painted and not so much on the design. A GP7 in MEC forest green is great. I don't know anything about engines in Europe, so I can't say anything for that. This picture makes a great paint scheme not look nearly as good as it really looked, but it was the best example I could find.

I havn't seen one in really life since they are all long gone, I seen them only in pictures.

The most current locomotive used by VIA Rail on their VIA1 trains I think has a marvelous design, sleek and well marked in the VIA colours. The other locomotive that I love to see are the VIA Budd Cars. I used to ride trains made up of these self propelled passenger cars form Niagara Falls to Toronto.

As a favourite diesel certainly the Russian-built M62 would have to be on my list. These brutes are true multi-purpose machines and make all the right noises.

[photoid=129141]

...and let's not forget steam. Top of the list for locos that ran into the new millenium has to be the Chinese QJ though I'm sure some would nominate Beyer-Garratts in Africa or some such.

I agree with John M. Day. M62 is probably the most popular diesel engine in Europe. Here you can see some photos:
Hungarian M62:

Gotta go with the N&W J class! VERY well designed late steam locomotive with great performance in passenger service. J Class 611 also gave us a great period on the Southern/Norfolk Southern Steam Excursion Program.

D&RGW 2-8-2
DM&IR Yellowstone

NZL
