View Full Version : CSX 7868

CSX 7868 went by on a train today, and the cab numbers were very unusual. The numbers are larger than normal, and of a different font than standard CSX locomotives. Does anyone know why the 7868 has these unusual numbers? Here is a link to a picture of the engine, though it will only be good for a few days. http://www.railpictures.net/viewreject.php?id=50979

That's the Reader's Digest large print edition, I guess...

Seriously, no clue. Thanks for sharing that photo.

I have a buddy that works at the Huntington shops. Has told me that there are some new federal standards regarding the readability of lettering and a lot of CSX engines are getting new non-standard cab numbers. He said they have actually purchased ready made reflective numbers from local lettering shops. I'll ask him if this is one of those cases.

That sounds plausible. I'm really just curious, as I had never seen a CSX engine with numbers like that before.

Here is a photo of 7868 before it recieved the larger number:

Well, my buddy at the Huntington shops said 7868 was just in the shops a few weeks ago and it had those odd numbers on it when it came in. He said the engine recieved some damage while off line (most likely on the UP as records show it spent some time there) and was repaired and renumbered at an "other than CSX" shop. I have seen photos of UP engines at the Huntington shop with damage and they get things like paint and lettering "close" and send it home.

Thank you for the answers. I have just one more little question. Does the 7868 have matching large numbers on the conductor's side? I only got a look at the engineer's side.

It has been that way for the better part of 2 years...I don't have an exact date when I saw it but I do remember it has been quite some time ago.

I photographed it in 2000 like that. Freak stuff like that happens from time to time.

The #7868 has had the nonstandard numbers for more than 4 or 5 years now. It was damaged while on UP and recieved the unusual font number when repaired by them. It is rather odd looking, have shot it a number of times over the last few years myself.
