There are several places in the southwest corner of South Dakota. The 1880 train should still be running in early fall. They run a 2-6-6-0 Mallet. There just aren't that many places to take shots as it runs through thick forest, but there are a few shots. The BNSF Powder River Sub cuts through the extreme southwest corner. No really good shots there, but if you go down into Nebraska just a bit there is a bridge at Crawford where you can sit and take photos of the BNSF helper units. It is worth the trip. The only other action is RCPE based in Rapid City. They skirt the northern end of the mountains and just into Wyoming. I haven't got to that stretch yet but will this year. Between Colony WY and Philip SD there is a fairly varied terrain. Downside is only one or two trains per day and road access isn't great. If you are driving through Sioux Falls (I-29 & I-90) you could meet up with me for some night action on the BNSF, or RCPE eastern end.

    Regards,
    Kent
