Black & White or Color?

I was rather unsure of which version of this image to submit. I rather like the mood of the black and white version, but thought it would get a reject for the grain or noise in the sky, so I went with the color version.

Which do you like better?

Black and white really doesn't work very well on that photo to me.

Agreed with Travis.

That is some bizarre lighting. Looks like a lot of backlighting and some on the front. I like the color version better.

Try a different B&W conversion method, that looks awful.

Go with the color-

I am a die-hard B&W fan, but in this case it simply does not work, and the color does. Remember the trick to making b&W work is shadows and depth, where as color works with temperature and types of light falling on the subject. They are often not the same at all.

Thanks for the input guys. Looks like I decided on the right version to submit.

The shots' lighting is unique Steve. While I have seen back lighting like what is on the ground, it is the fill light on the locomotive that makes the photo. And while I love B&W and your version has a lot going for it, it needs better processing because the quality is not there. Very close to working though.

However, the color version will always trump it. Color here adds the zing which gives the photo impact, eye appeal and success.
