Video gallery: People who make us ashamed to be railfans

Okay, so while perusing that other thread, I watched this video that was posted:

Now, this made me think back to all the other great men (and boys) who have been far too excited to see, for example, a normal AC4400 with "KCS" painted on the side in big, red letters.
So I propose this: A gallery full of videos of the most socially retarded railfans; the ones who cannot, and should not exist in society. These don't have to be on rail-videos, but the rule is that they need to make people like Chase seem normal by comparison.

I first remember seeing this video (along with many others from the same user) in a thread on these forms a few months ago. If you do a quick search on his channel, you might be able to find more interesting videos!

This is just stupid:

i think that guy takes it a bit to seriously.

If you guys let how other people act affect the way you think others see you, that says more about you than it does those "railfans." Just enjoy your hobby the way you see fit.

Well said...

I've had "overly enthusiastic and under hygienic" folk come up to me at baseball games, at car shows, at tech shows, at political rallies, at my house of worship, at parades. Yes, railfanning may have acquired a few more of those folks than other hobbies, but I've also had the pleasure to meet a huge amount of very good, very smart, and quite socially capable folks railfanning too.

And as Joe noted, that doesn't matter either. I'm out there because I like trains.

Ageed.[Ignores the weird looks of the people looking over my shoulder while I'm typing.]:lol:

The only time I've gotten close to that excited is when I saw a caboose leading an engine. No literary, the train was built

boxcar-boxcar-highnose engine-low nose engine-cabose--> (direction of motion)

milwman 01-29-2011 09:27 AM

I can see getting excited if something was a one off but for every train, May have ADD or something who knows?

Christopher Muller 01-29-2011 11:05 AM

We, as railfans, are a rare bread. I don't think there is anything normal about us, but some people are to the extreme, as someone else pointed on there are extremes in every hobby.

Now, for the "extreme folks", I was entertained for little bit at their reaction to trains... while I get excited about some things, I don't ever remember screaming from the mountain tops. Perhaps those that have shot with me can give examples, but I don't think so.

The videographer makes an appearance at 1:35 in this video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5v7FvMbHIuM
...and at 3:45 he has the audacity to make fun of another foamer. Thank goodness there is narration in the videos if you forget what the end looks like.

I agree with Christopher - railfans are so far out on the end of the population distribution that most summaries of population demographics don't even include us because they figure where we reside on that curve is just an artifact of fitting a curve to a distribution and not indicative of anything real. I think the idea of one railfan calling another railfan extreme is the old "pot calling the kettle black" sort of thing.

Joe the Photog 01-29-2011 01:45 PM

I don't know if railfans are that odd. I've done news stories on bee collectors and stamp collectors. I think they at least think that people think they're just plain odd. I've seen news tories on people who fill entire rooms with memorbilia from sports teams or political candidates. When you get down to it, what's so odd about us taking pictures of trains? Go to Flickr. There are a lot of people who take a lot of pictures of a lot of things.

Where is this place, I will never go there. Judging by the platform, looks like the same place the first video was taken.

God, what is wrong with Fullerton? It appears to be full of extremely fat people, guys who yell themselves hoarse at the first sign of a headlight, and tone-deaf singing foamers.
Lots of people have weird hobbies! And to them, other people with weird hobbies are still weird. Plus, we get the whole 'terrorist' thing. (I'd say a little bit more than photographers in general)

The ATSF mainline from LA to Chicago has ATS installed and is good for passenger 90 and freight 80. Timetable speed is 70 for freights now, I dont know what it was back in 2001. But I can tell you from firsthand experience, they do every bit of their maximum authorized speed across the desert. I would not be surprised at all if some of the stack trains go a little over the MAS at times.

Right, I would agree with the MAS being 70, because most of the engines they use are geared for around that speed.

These people seem fairly tame.

Chase55671 01-29-2011 06:58 PM

No doubt us being an odd breed. As others have already noted, Fullerton does seem to be full of some rather colorful ones. I think I'll stay away.

By the way, isn't El Roco from Fullerton? At least his sense of humor is rather funny, despite being so dry. ;)

As for local guys, we have some screwed up ones. One guy films videos of himself waving NASCAR flags then submits them to YouTube. He also wears the CSX vest while "foaming" and stands incredibly close to the tracks. He's got autism or something of that nature.

Others lack common sense and trespass way too much. We still don't top Fullerton though.. No trackside caroling!

I don't really have a problem with those kinds of actions, as long as they don't effect me.

Chase

You aren't getting off that easy. I expect video of you, Lloyd and Walter caroling under the station in Charleston next Christmas...

LSRC Railfan 01-29-2011 07:12 PM

Although the idiot in this video doesn't scream about a dash 9, he is incredibly stupid and makes me ashamed to be a railfan.
