CSX derailment in North Carolina
Looks like the Chemical Spill Xperts have done it again, sadly two crewmembers perished in the accident. Below is a link to the local news coverage.

It's on the Monroe Sub between Hamlet and Charlotte. Stack train Q194 rear ended (stopped) mixed freight Q618

And no need to bash CSX, NS has outdone them lately in this category

Technically, it's not on the track to Charlotte. It's between Hamlet, NC and Greenwood, SC. More specifically, it's between Monroe and Waxhaw. Q194 comes up from Atlanta to Monroe where they run around their train and take it on to Charlotte. I have a sick feeling the crew on Q194 were asleep and ran through some signals, though that's just speculation on my part.

Yes, you are right, this is part of the SAL mainline from Hamlet to Birmingham, the Charlotte subdivision branches off at Monroe

I wasn't going to speculate, but that was my first thought too. At any rate, there is no need to bash CSX because a crew rear-ended another train. This was signaled territory.

It's been reported on another source that they were both asleep and ran a stop signal.

I think I saw back recently someone questioning the need for PTC, well, here is another example of 2 lives that would have been saved by it.

Thanks for the update Troy. Didn't mean to offend you with the nickname for the CSX, I suppose it was in poor taste looking back. Having worked for NS awhile back, it amazes me with the alerter system on all locomotives that a crew could fall asleep without that thing buzzing loudly and/or stopping the train.
