I would like some suggestions about these compositions and if they are really missing the "rule of thirds"

I don't see anything wrong with either of them in my mind. I suspect that the problem is maybe you are shooting from too low of an angle. Just a guess on my part, as I don't think I've seen may photos in the database that look like yours.

Not really sure here. The first is definitely better than the second, perhaps just needed a hair of either the bottom or the top?

I think they're a bit too much in the middle of the photo under the rule of thirds. If you can drop them down a little lower in the photo, I think they might get accepted. To me, the CSX and UP photos you linked have a foreground that suggests they should be higher in the photo, and the RABe is low in the photo, it's just close.

Both submissions need closer cropping on the top and bottom, IMHO. That's particularly true when you have a completely featureless, blue sky. I would also crop off some of the foreground. Your editing software should be able to display the Rule-of-Thirds (RoT) grid. Place the nose of the lead unit as squarely in the center of one of those crosses, in this case, probably the lower right. I'm not a huge fan of the low-angle shooting position, mainly because it results in blurry ballast being the closest thing to the viewer, but that's just a personal preference. I think most people prefer to view a train from a human perspective, as opposed to a woodchuck's perspective, or bird's perspective. :wink:
