Roster shots?

Looking thru the database I noticed thats there are some roster shots on here so I was wondering what exactly would RP be looking for in them? I got a few I was thinking of trying....

My question might be "What are you looking for in a roster shot?"

RP prides itself on having the "best railroad photography on the 'Net" but typically will not turn down a properly lit and well composed image. Consequently, there are quite a few if not a majority of roster and wedge-like photographs on the site. This is not a bad thing as RP has become a superb database for modelers and preservationist in addition to being a site of great photography.

If you are looking for praise, oohs and ahs along with a few badges of recognition such as the POTW, People's Choice or Screener's Choice, I'd say this is not the place - unless there is something to the composition that makes it stand apart such as lighting, news content, weather, humor, ect. Otherwise, I think there is a site called "Train Photos" or "RR Picture Archives" which might be more appropriate. Still, you have captured some interesting equipment which would certainly be welcome to many who peruse the pages of RP.

As for your linked images - I'd Google "Rule of Thirds" if you are not sure what that is and maybe re-edit a few if you hope to get them on RP. There's a place for centered images but typically, RP screeners like subjects to be almost anywhere but dead center.

Random link on "Rule of Thirds":

There was a time when I thought that one could not achieve any of the various site recognitions with a simple roster or wedge. That time has passed.....;)

I think I may have a roster shot of my own, somewhere... let's see. Yep, here's one:

For the first, tilt slightly to the left and take some space off of the bottom. For the second, tilt slightly to the left, take a little off of the bottom, and crop a hair off of each side. The second two are nose coupled, and RP doesn't usually go for those. The B units are pretty cool though. Did you get a shot of the entire consist?

Try to do them like the Norfolk Southern ones, the one uploaded today got over 6,000 views so far and the days not over.

I agree with this. I believe the second one has the best chance of being accepted. It reminds me a little of this:

Tilted it to the left, but she appears to be leaning, the pole in BG looks like it is too.

Needs CW rotation. Level is based on the yellow horizontal.

Congrats, Wyatt! Looks good.

PS: Once you have a pic accepted you can go [photoid=395xxx] and it will post a clickable thumbnail of your posting - except you put in the id number of your accepted photo where the 395xxx is in my example.
