Curious as to what models of locos people have had (outside of work) cab rides in. Please retain any information that may be held against anyone.

MLW M420: A few runs back and forth drilling in the yard.

New Castle Industrial RR #4032
EMD GP 9-M: Paid to ride in this loco on 2 separate occasions to support the Beaver Lawrence RHS.

Alco S2: A few runs back and forth drilling in the yard.

Alco C425: A few runs back and forth drilling in the yard.

A6-F Railcar: I don’t know if this counts as a “cab ride”, but I was a guest the following day of this pic:

Alco S2: My brother and I rode the entire day with the crew. Approved, but asked not to share the ride.

EMD GP 8 & SW9: I rode the entire day with a friend, but asked not to share any details…for a while:wink:

GEVo. How did you guess?
Also, AC4400s. They were rattier at the time than the GEVos were. Especially those 9500s.
SD40-2s, that was always fun.
And GP38-2s on crappy yard track, the best.

I have had to pleasure of riding in many steam engines and a few diesels. Below is a list of the ones I remember off the top of my head.

Gosh, I've barely got anything. Operated a GP-9 at Portola, CA. As a kid, rode maybe 5 miles on a Penn Central SWxxxx, with my bicycle strapped to the hand rails.

Do my rides looking out the front window of DC Metro or Dallas Airport SkyLink count? :) :)

In my case, the lines I shoot are all museums and tourist railroads. The crews at these operations often have far more discretion to allow cab rides than common carriers. In some cases, the railroads are relatively local to me and I've gotten to know the crews really well. In other cases, the rides occurred on photo charters in which the charter operator arranged with the RR to allow some patrons to rotate through the cab during the course of a day.

It also helps to be old. :p My rides have happened over the course of about 10 years.

Sorry Janusz! Best I could do in my career so far! :grin: Most other railroaders with more than 5 yrs out there will have a similar list, all kinds of power on their trains. I'm sure "Burghman" can beat my list hands down!

I think I also rode in a GP7 or GP9 when I was younger.

I've had plenty others, but those are the only moving ones that I recall. I'm not exactly some innocent-looking 8 year old anymore so I'd be surprised if I got that many more cabrides (not that I'm complaining, I'd rather not put the crew's jobs in jeopardy just to get my fifteen minutes of fame in the cab).

Trust me, do this for a job and they all start to act and feel the same (except Universal Series and dash-7 GE's = total junk!), without any fame involved. Seriously, nobody is missing much! A newer widecab EMD or GE pretty much looks the same from inside and it is difficult to tell whichever you are running (unless the windows are opened, then the exhaust sound is a dead giveaway). :p
