What can I do to improve these images?

Folks,
I got a couple of rejections for poor cropping and looking for some insight on what I can do to make them "acceptable".

The first one I actually did crop just a tad to bring the train in a little bit closer, but wanted to preserve some of the background.

The second one there was no adjustments made at all, just resized to 1200x800.
The intention was to show the train cresting over the hill and dropping into the sag.

Thank you in advance for your help/"brutal honesty"!:-)

Need to follow the "rule of thirds." Subject (front of loco) should located one third from side and bottom of frame.

Nice shots, especially if you are a new photographer.

Mr. Drew has been here for a little while show casing some good gems

Now as for the cropping, I agree with Hatchetman. In the first shot, you have too much space on the right and a dull sky. And the second shot, the train is horizontally centered. Other than that, nice shots!

The sky in either shot does nothing for me. Just a blue wall in the background.

On the first one come down just a tad from the top to just about under the RP watermark. and crop it from the right as well to about the weeds right before the shadow

Here is my take on it

The other one probably needs to lose some foreground and sky. I know this isnt exactly the best crop, but here is what I saw.

Nothing that a liberal application of Black Butte Porter won't solve!

Admin could save considerable frustration to it's patrons - apparently new and old, if it were to revise it's list of rejections. "Centered subject", particularly top to bottom is quite taboo on RP it would seem, for better or worse.

Enjoying your series, Drew - centered or not!
(BTW - between you and I, I was going to suggest "add a horse", lol!)
