"Do you think they saw each other"

How does this get by the screeners? Look at their PhotoID numbers. One would have showed up immediately before the other.

Same train, same light, vastly different processing. One looks bland, the other looks juiced. Reality was probably somewhere in between. Quite a difference in color with the bridge supports.

Most of the thread is gone?? At least on my computer.

I decided to make an album for these times where we see the same scene and train from different photographers. If anyone finds more examples of this, please post them or let me know so I can add them to the album. I always find it interesting to see how different people compose and process a shot when presented with exactly the same opportunity and conditions.

It's so nice that they accepted it twice .

Meanwhile, poor old Baggy Dave can't even get them accepted once. Kent in SD |

[photoid=644867] I thought it was interesting as they came out together, maybe in the night. Also 67 has a lot of lean compared to 66, train is out of the curve so should be more like 66? Bob |
Bailey gets the nod there. However, why didn't he get the "similar to previous" rejection? It doesn't get any more previous than that!

[photoid=646884] Maybe too judgemental and hope he is not on this forum but I would consider the SC(#2) a fail? at least in comparison. Besides some other things the signals and sky cry out for a vertical. I was really happy to see the Austrian photo make the SC, this not so much. Bob |

I'm gonna disagree on the compositions - the first one is too tight; in the second one you have the pole line, mesas in the background and the rails provide a better lead-in. The blown headlights are a negative, however.

I enjoy both, but I think I prefer the second one as well.
|
I've yet to see a photo from Elijah that wasn't beaten to death in photoshop. He also loves to repair the noses in editing since Beech Grove doesn't. I like the second one better.
Drew, I hope you are recovering well. Take care! Loyd L. |
I like the composition of the second shot more than the first, it's a way too tight for my liking. I would have cropped the second one differently, but first one is way too tight of a crop

He got a little better exposure and the brights aren't clipping in the lights. It's also most likely a different camera, different lens, the shots were taken from different angles and locations, and the train was at a different ANGLE to the lens in both shots, that influences the capture too Yeah, he photoshopped the shit out of it, but to say it doesn't look real is ridiculous. I prefer the composition of the second shot, it shows the background much more, whereas the first shot literally frames just the signals and the train, and not much more. He left a lot more on the table IMHO. The nose of the locomotive is pretty washed out in the second shot though |

1. inverted halos (dark around signals) 2. normal halos around train 3. feathered appearance of the train 4. feathered noise in sky 5. oversharpened 6. massive work done on the headlights (banding, etc) 7. the signal bases and poles are too bright. 8. purple banding around signals I can't remember if 40 has nose damage, but I'm sure he would have corrected it in PS if there was lol Loyd L. |
Interesting color temp difference with the headlights between the two images.
