Phoenix railfanning

I am going to be in the Phoenix/Tempe area soon and was wondering if there are any good railfanning spots? Any shortlines within in short driving distance(less than an hour or so)?

Any suggestions would be appreciated!!

Not worth the effort, its pretty much dead there. It is a dead end destination for RR's from what I remember.

Heavy BSNF action to the north at Flagstaff and UP to the South

Also see if there's a yahoo groups to join. I don't know enough about Phoenix to help, but there is railfanning there.

Head about 40 minutes south to Maricopa to pick up UP's Sunset Route. If you head west from Maricopa on AZ-238, the area where it cuts through the mountains has some decent scenery, as well as a lot of saguaro cacti.

Thanks for the info. I did head down to the sunset line, and saw 3 trains in an hour and a half, not bad for Christmas eve. I did grab one pic good enough for here:

Someday I will head down there again, when I have more than the latter half of an afternoon. Some good photo opportunities out there.
