Trains on Streetview

Just an odd idea... anyone ever find anything odd railroad-related on Google Streetview?

About the strangest thing I've found... the camera looks like it's about to be hit when the train is actually backing up (D&I Railroad, Dell Rapids, SD):

Nowhere near as cool as yours (not even close), but here's another fun one -- if you do a 180 from the MK1200G (Los Angeles Junction is the only railroad that uses these), you will see the blue Ford SUV of railfan Chris Walker - who was chasing the train that morning.

Is that the one that just drove across the crossing away from the camera?

Edit: Scratch that, I spotted it now.

For others who look, no, he's sitting down the track, exactly 180 degrees opposite, waiting for the train... there's a great signal there... assume he got it.

I have gone to that spot more times that I want to think about, and have never caught a train there. All about luck.

Doesn't look like it's the most appealing area, exactly!

It's fine - industrial. I wouldn't hang out there after dark, but in the daytime, you're totally fine.

Wouldn't buy a house there, mind you.

Interesting shadow from the photo vehicle. That's the first time I've seen any evidence of the vehicle they use. Any ideas what it is by the distorted shadow profile?

No need to speculate...

I've had a suspicion that a few of the streetviewers are railfans, they have some ridiculously obscure roads streetviewed that only people who live there or railfans would use.
Case and point, chasing a CSX stack train across the Evansville viaduct on a one lane dirt road.

Alright, get ready to look for someone in your make of car pointing a camera at the screen! ;)

Freericks 06-24-2011 05:42 PM

You need to pay that bill, Troy.

I didnt think about that, it would be kind of cool if I could look and try to see myself. Let me try that, lol.

EDIT: I just looked and the photos/map they have of that location is several years old. I wonder how long it takes for them to compile that and make it available online.

You know what that was? That was a letter from my bank saying they sold my loan to Freddie Mac.

crazytiger 06-26-2011 10:44 PM

It took them like 9 mos. the first time through my area.
