Gallery: Ugliest Locomotives Ever Built!

Well since there has been a gallery posted in a few days I figured I'd come up with one since I got a shot on the DB that could just as well be "THE Ugliest Locomotive Built!"

[photoid=305955]

I think this one could just possibly make it!:lol:

I call it the "One Eyed" Monster!

Joe the Photog 12-03-2009 05:25 PM

I guess technically that could be the ugliest loco ever rebuiltthough an arguement could be made about the rarity of it. I think we all shoot the ugliest ones ever built every day.

All that spamming and you didnt even get top of 24.
I dont have anything in my collection to top that so i wont even try.
However i will disagree with Joe in that GE widecab's are not ugly, far from it, they are quite well designed from the aesthetic point of view, there's just far too many of them out there.

He's #3 in line behind the current two T24s! And I don't know if I'd call posting shots here and in YahooGroups spamming. If it hadn't been posted in SERails initially, I may not have seen it. And, yeah, it did kinda hit a nerve because I do the same thing.

:twisted::roll:

Somewhere in my collection I have a similiar unit rebuilt by the PICK shot in easely that I just could not get into the database at the time. Only different I can think of between the two is that the one I shot is red.

JRMDC 12-03-2009 05:41 PM

I thought this one was pretty ugly, from the front, but commenters disagreed.

I've already gotten my ToY or ToL24 out of it, so no spamming intent here. :)

[photoid=284070]

Not a photographic gem, but my most favorited shot ever. Some are more into the equipment than the composition.

[It's only been 12 hrs so far!]

Well Nik, I couldn't sit there and do a Gallery on "Street Running" because that wouldn't be fair...plus Street Running is getting pretty old from what it looks like.

And BTW, its about time my name gets on the Front Page again! :twisted:

Wow, yea its not too pretty! Too bad I wasn't even on this earth at the time to see it!:D

Anything over seas in my opinion.

Agreed (with exceptions)!

No wonder steam is so popular in the UK...

;-) :lol:

Agree with Janusz & Travis (!), and Nikos re: the GEs. This one isn't particularily ugly. It certainly isn't that pretty either, just utilitarian looking IMO. We can't tell what the other end looks like from this shot though so it might be a winner after all.

I agree 100%, but my dear friend Nikos wouldn't!:lol:

That isn't so ugly! I put it square in the average range.

I do wish you had shown more of the trainshed on the left, though. Next time, please!

How about a shot I took today.

Steam may be popular in the UK, but I wouldn't consider all their steamers hits in the looks department. Some may disagree, but I've never been a particular fan of English steam locomotive streamlining:

[photoid=287375]

[photoid=284018]

[photoid=226443]

[photoid=188994]

Of course, other countries built some less-than-stellar looking steamers too:

[photoid=305658]

And the UK has no corner on the market for ugly "modern" motive power:

[photoid=305383]

[photoid=299523]

[photoid=286308]

[photoid=283421]

Of course, we shouldn't forget the Espee's foray into the wonderful world of diesel-hydraulic traction:

[photoid=171913]

But these here have to be some of the ugliest engines ever built - I mean, seriously, a steam engine without horizontal cylinders and side rods? Come on!!! :razz:

[photoid=302348]

Sorry, Walter! :twisted:

...Ever notice the little award logo (such as Screener's Choice) uses one of these K-M road switchers in silhouette?

BarrySr 12-03-2009 11:30 PM

Whoa, I thought this thread was about CF7s:

You mean the best looking I guess? :smile:

Nah. :grin: They're still ugly - although I'll grant you that the Willamette looks worse. But at least they produce ashes and soot . . . :smile:

I'm shocked! No one has mentioned the Genset/Green Goats. While I personally find them somewhat appealing, most railfans dislike them with a passion.

Most railfans dislike the SD70ACe's/SD70M-2's as well, but again, I'm fond of them.

I like them, but then I like most switchers.

Definitely a mistake, demonstrating that humankind is flawed.

Agreed. Not sure what it is about yard switchers and other various yard engines, but I am quite fond of them. I suppose it may be the fact I don't live close to a large rail yard, thus when I do get the chance to visit one, it is a welcomed site to see something different.
