Gallery: Breaking the rules

Since we haven't had a gallery in freaking forever, I just had to come up with one...and I liked the idea. Post your shots that break the typical rules, but still made it on for some reason or another.

Cloudy, but made it on, cause it was a pan.
[photoid=328052]

High Sun, or would have been if I shot from track level. 4:00 in the afternoon in June.

OK, I'll toss in a few:

High sun:
[photoid=326758]

Verrrry cloudy:
[photoid=310408]

Crappy shot:

Some of mine:

Cloudy:

[photoid=330380]

[photoid=301913]

Cloudy, and pssst! It's a panorama from 4 portrait images:

[photoid=326901]

Backlit, high sun, and expected to be PEQ:

[photoid=294059]

Recently I've tried to submit a 3:1,8 crop image, IMO this ratio fits much better the scene, but that was dinged for BC:

Nice idea, not always that, that we want to show has perfect light conditions, there are in us to make a different shot and/or interesting one.

I have some poor lighted too!

[photoid=327675]

[photoid=327464]

[photoid=292157]

[photoid=291248]

And the most recently:

Nice idea!

GBR 07-12-2010 03:47 PM

What do you think, is it backlit enough or not?

[photoid=315546]

Toss in mine, I guess...

No sun:

About all I can think of at the moment...

How about a best of "digital manipulation". Anyone want to be the first?

Many can do it, very few would like to be known as such.

:D

As to the original direction of the thread. Basically everything I've submitted over the last year and a half has been at night, cloudy, or backlit.

Well, think we should start here, since it was discussed earlier, and I know the owner won't consider it a call out. :)

How about we re-name this thread to "Gallery: Soon to be removed photos from the database" and it could be a collage of California pans and selective color. :)

Some of my favorite shots have been taken in miserable weather. With steam locomotives, I say bring it on. Rainy, snowy weather adds so much to a shot when photographing steam.

Too bad "photo looks like crap" isn't a rejection reason, eh Travis? :twisted:

I'm not sure what this is, but I've always considered this my worst accepted shot. I might go and re shoot it this fall.

Actually that would qualify as common power from what I was told. I was told the 475 at Strasburg is common power because I could shoot it again even though it is the only N&W steamer running, so I would thing a UP steamer would qualify as well! Hahahahaha!!:D

I suggest reading the caption on the photo Mitch called out.

Aside from Dave's crappy shot (pun intended), my examples break the rules of high views. Often, but not the rule, a photo posted vertically or in B&W tends to get less views though there are obviously the acceptions.

Here's my rule breaker following the lines of the thread:

Backlit:
[photoid=307873]

High sun: (Special thanks for letting this scene in despite the time of day)

Thanks Chase! It was originally rejected as PEQ. I suspect that the Screener had never been to the WW&F and thought it was a shot from some type of kiddie park. I don't appeal much, but I appealed this one explaining what was going on, and they accepted it. The kids really get a kick out of the 2-foot handcar, because the diminutive size makes it somehow more approachable....and parents can't use the "you're too small" excuse to keep them away.
