Gallery: Most Surprising View Count

Since galleries seem to be the "in thing" these days, which photos do you have in the DB that you thought were ok, but didn't expect to garner a lot of views that have surprised you by how well they've done? I still can't get over the fact that my most viewed photo, almost 500 views ahead of my next-most viewed, doesn't even have a train in it. I never figured it would be so "popular".

A cloudy, roster shot, at the petting zoo, of common-ish power... although it was added 6 years ago and taken with a Leica!

I guess Chuck Norris helped?

Oddest was this wedgie of an Amtrak that went through the roof... turned out it was linked to by a pretty weird site that I wouldn't recommend.

[photoid=246378]

The next one, was a weird looking switch I found... really got a lot of hits.

So many to choose from. :lol:

This one was a rainy day wedgie that I originally wasn't going to upload. So far over 1100 views in 24 days, and 10 favorites.

I can't believe this shot has well over 2,000 hits while some of my more favorite shots easily have less than 1,000 hits.

Ween 07-17-2009 09:50 PM

4600+ views:
[photoid=215676]

2200+ views (but it was a Top of last 24, so that boosted it):
[photoid=282988]

1600+ views (linked from BNSF page on Wikipedia for some reason):

For a long time, this was my most popular shot and I have no idea why. 7,700 hits for a UP AC6000 pulling a train of Humvee's over the NS mainline. Was it the military equipment or the paint touch-up that resulted in the "UNION PACI" name on the side?

Could have sworn I left a comment on that one; did you delete it by chance?

Anyhoo --

I only have one pic with over 1,000 views, so I'm surprised if any of mine actually *get* viewed. However if I had to pick, it would be this one:

(7th most viewed in my collection of 32 as of this date)

[photoid=210941]

Probably viewed more than average due to the comment about the point-and-shoot camera.

Nope, didn't delete any comments from that photo. Perhaps it was deleted when you went on your hiatus and your account was closed (was that still back when you had to be logged in to leave a comment)?

It's a few years old now in the database, and SD90Macs are awesome, but still.
Oh noes, now it'll probably get more views.

Actually, I can still log into that old account and see all of those old comments I made. It's not deleted. If I had known it wasn't completely deleted, I wouldn't have bothered creating a new one.

The reason I had my pictures taken down was for privacy. If I had known that all I needed to do was resubmit them with a different name, I would have done that instead. Believe it or not!

Back to your regularly scheduled programming...

What is a "rail head shot"? I can't see any common theme between these shots.

JRMDC 07-18-2009 12:43 AM

Well, this one certainly was a surprise:

[photoid=195793]

but this next one just seems so ordinary. A basic wedgie, and I can't see the cart making it into something whose thumbnail is compelling, yet it is approaching 1900 views even though it was uploaded just six months ago. It was ToL24, don't know why that happened either.

The fact it was the only new D.C. shot for several months probably helped.

For me, i still cant believe this shot has over 1000 views and 11 favorites, i dont even like the shot. Was just a mediocre roster shot i submitted after a shot i liked better was repeatedly rejected. Surely these patch jobs arnt that rare.

I'm surprised by every shot I upload. I have very low self esteem when it comes to my work.

If this is a joke, it made me laugh out loud. If not... sorry 8)

It wasn't clear to me in your earlier post that your sentence had nothing whatsoever to do with your thumbnails. :)

Railfan Ohio 07-18-2009 02:16 AM

My surprise came as this picture of a freshly worked diamond. I wasn't sure if it would be accepted and it ended up as top of the week and has over 7000 views.

Mu surprise is this one... it is one of my favorites from the summer thus far and the view counts were relatively low for what I expected. One more reason I'm glad I'm not a view whore or base my accomplishment on RP.

J Douglas Moore 07-18-2009 04:16 AM

I got a surprise going both ways.............

I thoght this one would get a good hit count, but after 6 weeks, not even 500

[photoid=286073]

And

This one was a grab shot while I was watching them work. I nevedr expected it to get more thatn a few hits...

[photoid=257669]

wab1189 07-18-2009 04:48 AM

I was shocked to see how good this photo did. It also was number 2 in top photo in 24 hours.

[photoid=289853]

I have posted roster shots in the past and none of them have done as good as this one did.

Joe the Photog 07-18-2009 05:27 AM

This one is ranked #17 out of my 604 shots --

[photoid=93557]

As I recall, it had a mediocre opening day. No Top of the Day or any of that, maybe something around 500 views for a long time. Then some web site linked it. The next time I paid attention to it, it had more than 3000 shots. I had to do a double take. It's the only narrow gauge line in South Carolina with a grade crossing, I believe.

Joe the Photog 07-18-2009 05:29 AM

This is my second most popular L&C shot, just a common wedgie on a cloudy day cropped too close to the left frame. It would likely be rejected for those two reasons today.
